About the Workshop

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex intracellular organelle that houses a myriad of cellular functions. It serves as the entry point for the secretory pathway – facilitating the folding and maturation of most secreted and integral membrane proteins. It contains the enzymes synthesizing and regulating most cellular lipids. The ER is key for regulation of calcium homeostasis and actively maintains gradients for various small molecules across its membrane. Though the contiguous membrane it forms with the nuclear envelope, the ER impacts on nuclear organization and genomic integrity as well. In addition, the ER is in constant exchange with most other cellular organelles. Collectively these functions have extensive impact on the ability to maintain organelle and cellular homeostasis, and actively restore it when confronted with physiological and pathophysiological conditions that elicit stress. The objective of this EMBO Workshop is to bring together people from the different disciplines of ER research. By integrating the knowledge accumulated from these different perspectives, it is envisioned that a more integrated and comprehensive understanding of the ER’s role in cellular homeostasis will emerge.
