About the Event

Course Time: 2:00 - 6:00 PM IST

In this workshop you will learn how to make your science speak to scientific audiences via a presentation accompanied by slides. The workshop in particular covers presentation and slide structure and content, but also goes into matters of preparation, technicalities of presentation and psychological aspects.

About the trainer:

Andrew Moore

Andrew Moore began his scientific career with a background in biochemistry, progressing into structural biology, molecular biology, and biophysics. His transition into science communication was marked by his recruitment to EMBO, where he was instrumental in establishing and leading our programme for science communication and science policy.

At EMBO, Andrew conceptualized and implemented a broad array of impactful and recurring initiatives. These included high-level stakeholder meetings and policy fora, innovative media workshops designed to foster interaction between young scientists and journalists, and molecular biology workshops tailored for secondary school teachers. He also oversaw the creation of educational videos and digital learning platforms. Many of these activities were supported through competitive funding that Andrew successfully secured, notably from the European Commission and the Bosch Stiftung.

Andrew authored numerous reports and policy briefings and was a consistent presence in policy dialogues, frequently representing EMBO at meetings with the European Commission in Brussels. He served on the jury panel for the prestigious Descartes Prize and was a member of the Wellcome Trust’s assessor panel for science communication grants.

In addition to his programme responsibilities, Andrew was Associate Editor of EMBO reports, contributing to the journal’s editorial excellence. From 2008 to 2021, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal BioEssays. In 2016, he further expanded his editorial leadership by taking on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley Researcher Academy, a learning platform supporting early career researchers in developing key research and publishing skills.

Andrew continues to share his expertise in science writing and editorial through lectures and workshops delivered at international venues such as the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting, the Institut Curie in Paris, and the University of Heidelberg.

Programme

Before the course, selected participants will prepare a scientific talk of no longer than 2 minutes. The trainer will select a few scientific talks to discuss during the workshop.

The focus is on presenting your research in a talk for a particular audience of scientists who may be close to, or far from, your core area. Applying principles from cognitive psychology we will explore how presentations are digested by audiences, and the consequences that these insights have for you as the presenter. Remember, you never give the same talk to the same audience twice! This means that there is no such thing as "your talk", but rather a variety of presentations that you must adapt depending on the knowledge of your audience. Building bridges with familiar experiences and concepts is important, and so there will be practice in creating good analogies to explain unfamiliar concepts in your science. We go into slide structure and design for maximum digestibility and recall, and also cover presentation style and the technicalities that you must be aware of to give your best. Clearly, preparation is everything, but how to keep calm and do a good job when you're on the spot? We'll also go into the business of staying relaxed whilst presenting, and participants will have the opportunity on a first-come-first-served basis to give a "flash talk" of no longer than 2 minutes to the workshop audience, followed by a feedback round.

.Selection criteria

A total of 20 senior PhD students and junior postdoctoral researchers will be selected to attend this course.

Applicants will be selected by a panel of researchers and faculty based on the following criteria:

  • Current career stage - priority will be given to senior PhD students and junior postdoctoral researchers

    • Senior PhD students - in the last 2 or 3 years of their PhD and who may be applying for a postdoctoral fellowship within the next 2 or 3 years

    • Junior postdoctoral researchers - within the first 2 years after completing their PhD and who may be applying for a fellowship soon (just joined the postdoc lab and is looking for funding or plans to move to a different place after a short postdoc)

  • Motivation statement

Selected participants should prepare a scientific talk of up to 2 minutes. The trainer will choose a few to present during the workshop, followed by a discussion.

Important note:

To secure their place in the course, shortlisted applicants will be asked to present an endorsement letter from their supervisors (or equivalent) stating they will be freed from other responsibilities during the hours of the course (2 consecutive half-days).
