There is an emerging consensus that the traditional academic curriculum vitae format is poorly aligned with current principles for research assessment, favoring shortcuts -such as inappropriate research metrics- and penalizing applicants with non-traditional career paths. Research funding agencies and recruiters are adopting new formats that incorporate narrative elements, either supplementing or substituting the standard CV. Narrative CVs allow candidates to explain career choices, breaks, and contributions to collaborative projects, as well as professional activities with a broader impact on the scientific community or the society at large, thus producing a comprehensive portrait of their career and professional skills. The value of identifying and highlighting achievements and skills in a narrative form goes beyond the narrative CV itself, as it prepares candidates to apply for roles outside academia and improves the writing of cover letters and the performance in job interviews.
All stages of writing a narrative CV will be covered:
- Introduction to the narrative CV;
- CV and cover letter workshop;
- Narrative CV formats;
- Narrative CV reception.
Participants provide their standard CV and a cover letter before the course. After the course, participants are invited to provide a full version of their narrative CV to receive individual feedback.
