About the Workshop

Self-organization, the spontaneous formation of ordered structures from individual components is a fundamental phenomenon of life. It underlies biological processes across scales, from individual molecules to the organization of cellular compartments to the emergence of multicellular architectures. This organizing principle allows simple local interactions to generate increasingly complex functionalities at each level. Crucially, self-organization also enables systems to adapt and respond dynamically, allowing context-dependent decisions without necessarily requiring centralized control.

This EMBO Workshop on Cellular Matters: self-organization from molecules to functions focuses on concepts in self-organization such as cellular computation and learning, biochemistry and biophysics of complex systems as well as emergent phenomena in multicellular organisms, addressing the following core points:

  • How do cells integrate dynamic information to generate coherent, adaptive behavior?
  • What biochemical and biophysical principles coordinate structure and function within cellular systems?
  • How do intercellular interactions influence the development and organization of multicellular architectures?

A key objective is to advance interdisciplinary cellular biology by developing integrated experimental, computational, and theoretical strategies. To promote interdisciplinarity, development of new concepts, and a vibrant scientific atmosphere, this EMBO Workshop will avoid division into rigid topical sessions: Presenters across a variety of topics will be included in each session.

Attendees from industry (at most 2 admitted) and editors of scientific journals are welcome to join our meeting.

The top 12 scoring abstracts will be selected to deliver an oral presentation (15 mins + 5 mins Q&A for a total of 20 mins). The rest of the abstracts will be assigned poster presentations. The top 30 of the ones selected for posters will also have the opportunity to give a flash talk (2 min each) in the plenary session.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts are mandatory. Abstracts must be submitted in English and include the title, authors list, and affiliations (each affiliation should be listed at least once). Registrations without an abstract will be automatically rejected.

The abstract should be submitted with the agreement of all listed authors and organized keeping in mind context, methodology, results & discussion.

Length: Max 300 words (title, author list and affiliations excluded).

No tables or graphics should be included in the abstract.

When using abbreviations within the body of the abstract, please spell out the name in full at first mention and follow with the abbreviation in parenthesis.

It is the responsibility of the author to ensure abstract text does not contain any typos, grammatical errors or copyrighted content.

No changes can be made after submission.

Poster specifications

Accommodation

In the spirit of the conference to foster interactions, sustainability, and due to the limited lodging capacity of Monte Verità, attendees will partly be accommodated at a nearby Hotel and are expected to share a twin room. The number of single rooms is limited and only available at the Hotel (not at Monte Verità): precedence will be given to people with documented needs and then on a first-registered, first-served basis.

Transport

The Swiss public transportation system takes you almost everywhere and is very reliable.

Detailed information on airports and public transport to reach the Congress Center can be found at https://csf.ethz.ch/monte-verita/by-train0.html.

By plane

If you fly, the most convenient airports are Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH) and Milano Malpensa, Italy (MXP).

Trains connect both airports to Locarno.

From Zurich Airport to Locarno train station: less than 2.5 hrs; 30-min frequency

From Milano Malpensa Airport to Locarno train station: less than 2.5 hrs; hourly frequency.

By train

If you travel by train the closest train station is Locarno. Train timetables available on the SBB website.

Public Bus (from Locarno railway station)

Take Bus 1 from Locarno railway station (Stop C) to Ascona (Stop "Ascona Centro") and then walk uphill to Monte Verità (approximately 25/30 minutes): head towards the Post Office, continue along "Via del Borgo" to the Boutique Hotel & Ristorante Antica Posta, turn right towards "Scalinata della Ruga". At the end of the steps continue along "Strada Collina" until you reach the entrance of the Fondazione Monte Verità.

Shuttle bus

A free 8-seater bus shuttle between the Locarno train station and Monte Verità will be available for 4 to 5 hours on the day of arrival and departure to take the participants from/to the train station to/from the venue, first-come first-served basis.

Taxi

Various taxis are available at Locarno railway station. The company "EcoTaxi" usually uses hybrid vehicles and has a slightly lower price (2025 fare 26 CHF, up to 4 people between 6 am and 10 pm + 4 CHF night hours. Fares might change). The EcoTaxi can be pre-booked or contacted upon arrival: +41 91 792 21 01 (all numbers) or 0800 321 321 (free call from Swiss numbers). The ride takes around 15 mins. Since many people will arrive with the same trains it would be advisable for sustainability to look around for fellow participants and share the ride.

About the Area

This EMBO workshop takes place at Monte Verità a state-of-the-art conference and cultural center.

Monte Verità sits on the hills above Ascona and Lake Maggiore and has always been a magnetic pole of convergence of ideas, trends, experiments and historical figures. An alternative and vegetarian colony of the early twentieth century, since 1989, it has housed the center Congressi Stefano Franscini, which draws top researchers from different disciplines and from all over the world to Monte Verità every year.

Monte Verità has a very welcoming campus-like structure, offering lodging, conference halls, and a restaurant in a beautiful park.

Lecture Halls

The oral sessions will take place in the “Auditorium” while the posters will be set up in the Sala Balint and will stay up for the full duration of the event.

Restaurant

All meals will be provided in the Luce Dining Room.

Lodging

Consistent with the spirit of the workshop the attendees will be expected to share rooms unless serious reasons with documented proof are provided.

Monte Verità cannot accommodate all participants within its campus thus extra rooms have been booked at a nearby Hotel (walking distance).

The rooms at Monte Verità will be assigned on a first-registered first-served basis. No matter where you will be lodging, all meals will be taken together at Monte Verità.

The number of single rooms is limited and only available at the Hotel (not at Monte Verità) and precedence will be given to people with documented needs and then on a first-registered, first-served basis.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

While we think that in person meetings provide the best chances for networking both at the scientific and social level, we are committed to making the meeting as sustainable as possible.
