About the EMBO-FEBS Lecture Course

Physical virology is an interdisciplinary field at the interface of virology, biophysics, structural biology, chemistry, engineering and computational science. This EMBO Lecture Course on Physical virology: from form to function examines how viral structure, mechanics and dynamics determine infection and how quantitative physical approaches can reveal and control these processes. It is aimed primarily at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and combines advanced training with interaction among established investigators, early-career researchers and industry scientists.

Following the theme "From Form to Function," the programme covers viral architecture, capsid mechanics and assembly; membrane biophysics, fusion and entry; single-molecule and single-particle studies of virus-host interactions; organelle remodelling; mathematical modelling, computation and AI; synthetic biology and engineered virus-inspired systems; and next-generation optical, AFM and cell-free methods. Lectures, selected participant talks, poster sessions, meet-the-speaker discussions and a forward-looking round table will promote interdisciplinary exchange.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

About FEBS and the FEBS Advanced Courses programme

As a grass-roots organization FEBS provides a voice to a large part of the academic research and teaching community in Europe and beyond. The FEBS Advanced Courses programme provides grants to expert scientists to organize courses that bring together researchers working in a similar research area, for training, updates, and networking. FEBS collaborates with EMBO, and other organizations, to co-fund some of these courses. You can learn more about FEBS here.

  • ACADEMIC EUR 1400
  • INDUSTRY EUR 1800

Registration includes:

  • Accommodation for five nights
  • Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner), two coffee breaks per day, and beverages during meals
  • Welcome cocktail and the gala/conference dinner on the final evening
  • Most participants (except invited speakers and organizers) will share double rooms. Optional single-room upgrades are subject to availability and extra cost

Registration information

Applicants must submit a motivation statement (maximum 350 words) explaining their interest in the course and expected benefit from attendance. Applicants requesting financial support must also provide a brief justification of need. No CV or reference letter is requested for the application.

Payment

All invoices will be sent as email attachments.

For payments by bank transfer, a special process applies. Our payment provider, Stripe, generates a personal virtual bank account with its own IBAN for each attendee who selects this payment method during checkout.

This allows us to automatically match each bank transfer to the correct attendee, without relying on the payment reference or the exact amount entered by the payer. An IBAN is generated only for attendees who choose to pay by bank transfer; it is not generated for other payment methods.

The relevant payment details will be sent by email.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation notifications and refund requests must be submitted in writing by email to the organizing team at febs27@orgalution.de as soon as possible.

Cancellations received by 25 April 2027 will generally be eligible for a refund, less an administrative fee of €120. Cancellations received after this date are generally non-refundable.

Each cancellation request will, however, be considered individually.

Selection criteria

Applications will be reviewed by the organizers using: (1) scientific quality, (2) relevance to the course theme, and (3) motivation and expected benefit from attendance. The review will use the research abstract and motivation statement (maximum 350 words each), plus a brief justification of financial need where support is requested. Final selection will seek an interdisciplinary cohort across virology, biophysics, imaging, structural biology and computational analysis, with balanced representation across institutions and career stages and without overrepresentation from individual laboratories. Geographic and gender balance will be monitored. Travel/registration support will be allocated on merit and need, with particular consideration for applicants from developing countries.

Abstract guidelines

Submit one research abstract of no more than 350 words. The abstract will be assessed for scientific quality and relevance to the course theme. A separate motivation statement, also limited to 350 words, is required as part of the application.

Poster specifications

Standard A0 poster size in portrait format is recommended (33.1 inches wide by 46.8 inches high, or 84.1 x 118.9 cm).

FEBS Registration Grants

A limited number of FEBS Registration Grants are available to support the participation of early-career scientists in this course. These funds will cover, partly or fully, the registration fee (up to a maximum of 800 EUR per person).

The selection of applicants to receive FEBS Registrations Grants will be carried out by the course organizers on the basis of CV, abstract, and motivation letter, and approved by the FEBS Treasury Office according to the FEBS eligibility criteria.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
