About the Workshop

Lipids are central to energy storage, and signaling, and their metabolism must be tightly regulated to maintain cellular and organismal homeostasis. Lipid droplets are ubiquitous organelles within this network and act as key hubs for lipid storage, synthesis, and turnover. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism and lipid storage is linked to numerous diseases, including obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, neurological disorders, and cancer, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood.
This EMBO Workshop on “Lipid Metabolism and Storage: From Cellular Mechanisms to Disease Pathways” will bring together an interdisciplinary group of scientists working on lipid droplets, metabolic regulation, cell biology, and the physiology of lipid metabolism and lipid storage. Topics will range from lipid droplet dynamics, organelle interactions, substrate fluxes, and adipose tissue biology to the role of lipid metabolism in obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, neurological disorders, and cancer. In addition, this workshop will showcase emerging technologies, including single-cell approaches, proteomics, lipidomics, advanced imaging, and systems biology methods, that are transforming our understanding of lipid homeostasis across biological scales. This EMBO Workshop will provide ample opportunity for professional development and networking, particularly for junior scientists.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

All participants including faculty need to submit an abstract to be considered for participation in the workshop. If the number of applications exceeds the capacity of the venue, participants will be selected from submitted abstracts based on:

  1. Scientific excellence and content of the abstract representing the full scope of the workshop
  2. For fairness reasons the maximal number of participants from the same lab may be capped
  3. Priority to participants who complement topics that are not covered by invited speakers

The organizers will ensure a balanced participation of senior PIs and early career scientists, especially graduate students and postdocs. Likewise, they will aim for a diverse group of scientists regarding gender and geographical location.

Each selected participant will be requested to present a poster. Outstanding abstracts will be selected for short oral presentations or poster flash talks.

Abstract guidelines

Your abstract should contain the following information:

  • Title
  • Authors and affiliations (Please specify the presenting author)
  • Maximum abstract length is 250 words
  • Please indicate in the registration form whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation

Poster specifications

Maximum poster size is A0 portrait (84,1 cm x 118,9 cm / 33.1 x 46.8 inches)

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
