About the Workshop

This EMBO Workshop on Insect Hormones will discuss emerging research in the field of insect hormones, and how it impacts all areas of insect biology including development, physiology, nutrition, host-pathogen interactions, immunity, metabolism, behaviours, and reproduction. In addition to being thematically diverse, this workshop will include work carried out in a variety of insect species from diverse orders, ranging from hemimetabolous crickets to holometabolous fruit flies. Beyond research resulting from the application of classical experimental approaches, a special emphasis will be put on the use of state-of-the-art and emerging technologies and methodologies, including recently implemented gene-editing techniques, spatial and single-cell omics, 3-D organ and whole-body imaging, inter-organ signalling, and latest advances in machine learning and data analysis tools. This EMBO Workshop will include junior and senior invited speakers, as well as talks and posters selected on the bases of the abstracts submitted. The poster sessions, as well as the venue, will provide ample opportunities for discussion and networking.

Venue

Destino Valparaiso - Museo del Inmigrante
Concepción 499
Cerro Concepcion
2371561
Valparaiso
Chile

Accommodation

Attendees will have a wide selection of types of housing available, from standard hotels (e.g., Ibis Hotel) to boutique hotels and aparthotels. All housing can be reached on foot (5-15 minute walk).

Transport

Chile has one international airport, which is located in Santiago (the capital). From there, Valparaiso can easily be reached by public transport (intercity busses run every ca. 20 minutes throughout the day and late into the night) as well as by shuttle or private transport. Valparaiso is located at around 120 Km from Santiago. Within Valparaiso there is plenty of public transport and taxis (as well as Uber). In Chile most people use public transport, which is cheap and reaches most areas of a city.

About the Area

The venue is within the grounds of the recently inaugurated "Museo del Inmigrante" (Immigrant Museum), which showcases the diverse contributions of immigrants to the city of Valparaiso. It is housed in the old German School, which has been completely remodelled while maintaining the historical building. The museum itself occupies one side of a large courtyard, within which there are restaurants, and 2 conference rooms that can each house up to 100 people and will be used for this meeting. It includes seating, a podium, a terrace and an entrance foyer, where coffee breaks can be served. It is next to a long corridor and associated room where posters will be presented and displayed for the duration of the meeting. This venue is perfect for this meeting because it is within walking distance of restaurants and hotels. Both the conference and the room where the posters will be shown have separate entrances from the entrance to the museum; thus, these spaces will effectively be private spaces assigned to this scientific event.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

The meeting will be held in Chile, so travel from Europe by train is not feasible.

  • The food included is the coffee breaks, the lunches, and the conference dinner. Thus, asking attendees to always select vegetarian foods is not possible
  • The venue is located in an area that is within walking distance of hotels and restaurants. Thus, all travel during the meeting will be on foot
  • Abstract books and programs will be shared in electronic form only
