About the Workshop

Endocytosis and membrane trafficking are fundamental, multi-scale processes essential for the organization, dynamics, and morphogenesis of membranes, organelles, cells, and tissues. Recent advances in super-resolution microscopy, quantitative in vivo imaging, cellular engineering, and computational modeling have provided unprecedented insights into how these processes operate across scales.

Comparative studies across species, including archaea and early eukaryotes, have further revealed the evolutionary diversity of endocytic pathways and their molecular machinery. Together, these advances, driven by interdisciplinary collaborations between biologists, physicists, and chemists continue to reshape the field.

This EMBO Workshop on Endocytosis will highlight these emerging directions, with a dedicated session on the evolutionary origins of endocytosis, alongside sessions exploring its roles in intercellular communication, tissue morphogenesis, and cancer. The sessions will start with joint talks from researchers with complementary views on the topic.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

The cost one way is around 25 Euro.

Boats operate from approximately 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., (check the schedule on the url above, schedules could vary with the exact day and the crossing takes around 50 minutes. You should therefore arrive in Naples no later than 2:00 p.m. on Sunday to ensure that you reach the hotel on time.

Getting to Naples

By train

Arrive at Napoli Centrale railway station. From the station, you can walk around 30 minutes or take the metro line 1 at Duomo station direction Piscinola Scampia and exit at Municipio ( two stops ) to the harbor Molo Beverello.

By plane

Arrive at Naples Capodichino Airport.

From the airport, you can either:

Take a taxi to the harbor Molo Beverello. Official taxis should clearly display the standard fares. Avoid taxis that do not display them, and agree on the price with the driver before starting your journey. The fare to the harbor should not exceed approximately €35 including luggages.

Take the Alilauro shuttle bus from Naples Capodichino Airport (Touristic Coach Bus Parking) to Molo Beverello (approx. 40 min). Tickets cost €10 and can be purchased online on the Alilauro website, where you will also find schedules and instructions.

Travelling from Naples to Ischia

Take a hydrofoil or ferry to Ischia Porto. When purchasing your ticket, make sure you select Ischia Porto as your destination—not Forio or Casamicciola.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

  • A 10 % discount on registration fees will be provided to participants traveling by train
  • Based on self-declared data during registration, the overall carbon footprint of the meeting will be estimated based on travel-related emissions. We will communicate the estimated total footprint as well as the emissions savings achieved through lower-carbon travel choices
  • The venue takes some energy efficiency measures such as hosting the largest photovoltaic installation on Ischia island, generating approximately 25% of the hotel’s energy needs. Rainwater is collected for garden irrigation and for growing fruits and vegetables used in the restaurant, while additional ingredients are sourced locally and seasonally. Heat recovered from the air-conditioning system is reused to produce sanitary hot water, improving overall energy efficiency
  • No single-use plastic will be used for meals or drinks. Participants will be encouraged to bring reusable bottles. Vegetarian and vegan options will be offered at every meal, including two fully vegetarian diners.
  • Clear and visible waste-sorting system will be implemented throughout the conference venue
  • Name badges will be made from sustainably sourced recycled paper, with lanyards reused from previous conferences. No printed materials will be distributed; all information will be provided digitally
