About the Workshop

Cilia are microtubule-based projections present on most human cells. They function either as motile structures or as immotile sensory organelles that regulate essential cellular and developmental processes. Conserved from unicellular organisms to mammals, cilia are fundamental to eukaryotic life. Their dysfunction causes a growing group of inherited disorders known as ciliopathies, linking cilia research to genetics, physiology, biophysics, and translational medicine.

While core mechanisms of ciliogenesis and cilia resorption are conserved, recent discoveries reveal unexpected complexity. Cells can deploy a modified cell cycle to achieve multiciliation, and cilia display tissue-specific receptors enabling specialized responses, including metabolic regulation and hormone signalling.

These findings are reshaping our understanding of ciliary architecture, protein composition, signalling pathways and tissue specificity.

This EMBO Workshop on Cilia will focus on key questions remaining on these aspects, regarding how cilia assemble and disassemble, how cargo selection is regulated, and how functions vary across tissues. We will bring together experts to address tissue and cell-specific roles of cilia.

Selection criteria

The Organizing Committee will make the selection of abstracts for oral or poster presentations based on novelty, how advanced the project is and quality of the presentation. Notifications of the outcome will be sent out by December 2, 2026. Acceptance of invitation for selected speakers must be provided by January 1, 2027. Please note that submitting an abstract does not constitute registration for the meeting.

The presenting author of an accepted abstract must register by 22 February 2027 at the latest, subject to fees as highlighted above.

Registration is mandatory.

Abstract guidelines

  • The abstract must be submitted in English
  • Abstract title should be max 250 characters (spaces included) and should reflect the content of the abstract
  • Commercial names may not be used in the abstract title
  • Authors must be listed with name and surname. Only institutional affiliations, cities and countries should follow. One of the authors must be flagged as “Presenting author”
  • Abstracts should be organized without headings, and not exceeding 250 words
  • Tables and figures can be uploaded with the abstract (JPG)
  • Abbreviations may be used if standard or if spelled out and defined at the first use. Compounds should be mentioned with the generic name, in lower case. Commercial names are admitted in the text, with an ®, and if in brackets following the generic name, i.e. “generic (Commercial ®)”

Abstract Regulations

With the submission of an abstract to the EMBO Workshop on Cilia, the presenting author:

  • Accepts responsibility for the accuracy of the submitted abstract
  • Confirms that all authors are aware of and agree to the content of the abstract and support the data presented
  • Warrants that the data and conclusions presented in the abstract have not been published in the same format and with the same title prior to the date of the congress
  • At the end of the abstract, a statement regarding potentials conflict of interest of the authors involved is required. This statement will not count to the word limit

Poster specifications

For the upcoming session, all presenters must bring a physical poster, with fabric printing highly recommended to simplify transit and to enhance sustainability.

Posters are required to follow a strict A0 portrait layout (841 mm x 1189 mm/ 33.1 in x 46.8 in) and must prominently display a clear title, author names, and an abstract. To ensure an engaging presentation, please make sure all text, headings, and figures are large enough to be easily read from a distance.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

About the Area

Located just an hour north of Milan, Stresa has been an international meeting point for thinkers, artists, and royalty since the 19th century. With breathtaking views over Lake Maggiore, grand Belle Époque hotels, and proximity to alpine peaks and lush gardens, Stresa provides an inspiring and serene backdrop for scientific exchange. The town is highly walkable, with restaurants, cafés, and shops all within easy reach of the conference venue. Participants can also take a short boat trip to the famous Borromean Islands — Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori — or explore the surrounding Piedmontese countryside during free time.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

Catering will feature locally sourced, zero-kilometre ingredients, with one dedicated vegetarian day. Bottled water will be replaced by water fountains and jugs, and no single-use disposable wares will be used — reusable crockery only.

We strongly encourage all who can to travel by train, and a gift gadget will be received at registration by all participants providing evidence of travelling by train. At least four European invited speakers and organizers are required to travel by train rather than by air.

The venue (Hotel Regina Palace) has three EV charging stations and provides full Wi-Fi throughout, reducing the need for printed materials. Abstract books and programmes will be shared in electronic form only. Seed-paper badges will be used, and fabric or locally printed reusable posters are encouraged.

A dedicated sustainability roundtable will be held during one of the morning networking breakfasts.
