About the Workshop

Technological advances over the past decade have enabled genome-wide mapping of chromatin organization across diverse organisms at unprecedented resolution. These studies have uncovered both conserved principles and striking diversity in chromatin structure and regulation across the tree of life. However, the evolutionary origins of this diversity, and the constraints shaping chromatin evolution, remain only partially understood. Recent breakthroughs in phylogenomics, structural biology, molecular genetics, and cell biology have revealed unexpected commonalities, including histone homologues in viruses and bacteria and parallels in 3D genome organization between archaea and eukaryotes, alongside lineage-specific innovations in chromatin organization.

This EMBO Workshop will focus on rapidly advancing areas of research, including centromere evolution, chromatin-mediated genetic conflicts, the evolutionary impact of 3D genome architecture, and the role of nuclear evolution in shaping chromatin organization. This workshop will strengthen this growing community and accelerate conceptual integration across biological scales and systems.
