About the Workshop

The tight control of cell division is fundamental to multicellular development, ensuring the formation of tissues and organs with the correct size, shape and function. This EMBO Workshop brings together researchers working on cell-cycle regulation, developmental biology, quantitative imaging and single-cell approaches to explore how cell-cycle control drives developmental complexity.

Over four days, the programme covers five themes: (1) regulation of tissue growth and patterning; (2) diversity and adaptations of cell-cycle control across evolution; (3) cell-cycle control in early embryonic development; (4) coupling of the cell cycle to cellular differentiation; and (5) cell-cycle clocks, oscillators and the control of developmental tempo. Recent advances in long-term imaging, tissue-specific protein degradation, genome editing and single-cell sequencing are revealing how dynamic cell-cycle regulation is integrated with developmental signalling, fate decisions and tissue morphogenesis.

This EMBO Workshop aims to foster dialogue between early-career and established researchers, define shared frameworks and spark new collaborations that bridge the cell-cycle and developmental-biology communities.

Selection criteria

All applicants must register to be considered and preference will be given to registrants who submit an abstract. Participants will be selected by the organizers (Matilde Galli, Silvia Santos and Stefano Di Talia), taking into account the scientific content and quality of submitted abstracts and their relevance to the scope of the workshop. To ensure broad participation, the number of participants from any single institute may be capped if registrations exceed capacity. Early-career researchers and a diverse, international group of applicants are strongly encouraged.

Abstract guidelines

Please submit an abstract describing recent or unpublished work relevant to the workshop themes. Include the abstract title, all authors and their affiliations, and the abstract body (plain text, up to 250 words). Indicate whether you would prefer to present a poster or be considered for a selected short talk. All abstracts will be considered for poster presentation; a subset will be selected for oral presentation.

Poster specifications

Posters should be A0 size, portrait orientation (841 mm wide × 1189 mm high). Poster boards and mounting materials will be provided on site.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
