About the Workshop

Astrocytes are ubiquitous non-neuronal cells found throughout the central nervous system, which are involved in a myriad of brain functions from initial synapse assembly and modulation of circuit function, through to maintenance of homeostasis and metabolic support, memory formation and generation of behaviors.

Numerous signaling pathways and astrocyte-specific functions have now been characterized and astrocyte-targeting therapeutic strategies are moving closer to clinical translation. Increasing attention is now being directed toward astrocyte interactions with their cellular surroundings, including neurons, microglia, oligodendrocytes, vascular cells and toward their systemic roles, particularly through regulation of the blood–brain barrier and communication with peripheral organs. As such, the current need is now to integrate fragmented knowledge into a coherent conceptual and experimental framework.

This EMBO Workshop will serve to guide astrocyte research in a unified manner by focusing on cutting-edge, unpublished work tackling five main themes:

  1. Technologies enabling human-relevant astrocyte biology
  2. Reconstructing astrocyte architecture and interactions
  3. Defining astrocyte diversity and its functional meaning
  4. Astrocytes as active components of neural circuits
  5. Targeting astrocytes for diagnosis and therapy

Selection criteria

Participation in the conference is limited to 160 attendees. The primary selection criterion is the quality of the scientific work. The Organizing Committee will evaluate submitted abstracts based on their relevance to the astrocyte field and alignment with the workshop topics. The presentation of unpublished data is encouraged and will be given priority.

The selection process will take into account equality, diversity, and inclusion, with special consideration for participants with disabilities. We will also ensure gender balance, diversity in career stages, and geographical representation.

We strongly encourage participation from PhD candidates and postdocs. Selected abstracts will be chosen either for short talks, flash talks and/or poster sessions.

Abstract guidelines

Title: The abstract title should be no longer than 20 words. Capitalize only the first word of the title (unless proper nouns require capitalization).

Authors and affiliations: Enter the requested information for each author in the online submission form, including first name, last name, institution or company, country, and email address. Please designate one author as the first author and indicate which author will give the presentation.

Abstract length: Abstracts must not exceed 200 words, excluding the list of authors and affiliations. Figures, references, keywords, and acknowledgements should not be included.

Presentation preference: During submission, authors may indicate whether they wish to be considered for an oral presentation or a poster presentation.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
