About the Workshop

The ubiquitin system is fundamental to virtually all biological processes and is essential for maintaining cellular and organismal homeostasis. Recent technological advances are revealing new roles for specialized ubiquitin signals, including understudied chain types and ubiquitin-like proteins, and how these post-translational modifications regulate diverse cellular functions. Dysregulation or pathogen-mediated hijacking of Ub/UBL pathways is increasingly recognized as a driver of disease, and both academic and industry researchers are now intensively targeting Ub/UBL pathways for therapeutic intervention.

This EMBO Workshop will cover the latest developments in understanding how Ub and UBLs contribute to diverse biological pathways, with a focus on mechanistic insights and disease-associated perturbations, and will showcase opportunities at the interface of basic biology and translation.

The primary goals of this EMBO Workshop are to:

  1. Present cutting-edge discoveries and novel methodologies in the Ub/UBL field.
  2. Bridge basic mechanistic research with translational applications and discuss the challenges of harnessing Ub/Ubl pathways for therapeutic applications.
  3. Foster cross-disciplinary collaborations between established researchers and trainees by facilitating interaction and discussion.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Cancellation policy

All requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to embo2026ubiquitin@gmail.com no later than 29 July 2026. The registration fee will be refunded in full, less an administrative fee of 20% of the registration amount.

Cancellations received after 29 July 2026 or no-show will not be refunded at all.

Selection criteria

Participant selection will be guided by the scientific quality of submitted abstracts, according to the expected scientific impact of the work on the conference and the ubiquitin/Ubl field. It is therefore requested that all participants submit an abstract (at the time of registration, they should also specify whether they wish to present a poster or short talk). We will give preference to young scientists and PIs at an early stage of their career in the selection of short talks. In addition, a proper balance of participants from different countries, genders, and career stages will be sought.

For participants who do not plan to present their work, a short statement describing current research interests and reasons for Workshop participation should be provided instead.

The organizing committee will send a notification of selection for oral presentations 2–3 weeks after the abstract submission deadline.

Abstract guidelines

Abstract MUST:

  • be submitted in English
  • include the title, authors list and affiliations
  • be submitted with the agreement of all listed authors
  • character limit: up to 200 words

A significant number of oral presentations will be selected by the Scientific Committee based on scientific quality, topic relevance and novelty of data presented.

Poster specifications

Please bring one printed copy of your poster in portrait orientation (NOT landscape).

Dimensions of the poster boards are 1 m wide and 2 m high.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
