About the Practical Course

Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a devastating condition with limited therapeutic options. Recent years have seen substantial progress in understanding the pathophysiology of SCI, mainly due to advances in experimental models, ranging from zebrafish to organoids. All of which have provided powerful tools to dissect molecular mechanisms and test therapeutic strategies. With the recent emerging platforms, such as spinal cord organoids to spinal stimulation and CRISPR-based genetic tools in rodents, new avenues for translational research have opened. Despite these advances, many young scientists lack access to standardized, hands-on training in SCI animal models, limiting reproducibility and slowing cross-lab translation. Moreover, this EMBO Practical Course is uniquely designed to standardize protocols, promote best practices, and support early-career researchers working in SCI.

This EMBO Practical Course addresses that gap by providing an immersive, model-spanning experience from in vitro to in vivo, including mouse, rat, and zebrafish systems together with in vitro, in association with clinical relevance and studies. Participants will gain critical technical skills, engage with expert instructors, and explore ethical and translational considerations.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

To minimise waste and the use of resources, name badges will be plastic-free, and the programme and abstract book will only be provided in electronic format. All advertising will be exclusively electronic.

We will include labeled recycling bins in all lecture and practical rooms as a practical and visible step to reinforce our course commitment to sustainability.

At the end of the course, we will create a system where labs/participants can donate/receive leftover frozen tissues, antibodies, or surgical instruments used during the teaching program as a way to cut waste and reduce procurement emissions as well as improve the 3´Rs for animal use.

To offset the CO2 footprint of the meeting, we will collect voluntary donations for Plantar uma Árvore, a local reforestation initiative.
