About the Practical Course

This EMBO Practical Course will expose Latin American students to recent advances and modern techniques in neuroscience research using invertebrate model systems. These systems have produced fundamental discoveries in neuroscience and biomedical research, and their use is relatively inexpensive, compared to mammalian models. However, they are not widely used in Latin America, and there are few opportunities for Latin American students to gain hands-on experience using these animals. This EMBO Practical Course helps to overcome this shortcoming by increasing awareness of the utility of these systems and by providing practical laboratory experience.

This EMBO Practical Course focuses primarily on Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. We also include bees, as they are an established model for research in learning and memory, and for the first time, will include laboratory exercises with ants, as they are an emerging genetic model system following the successful application of CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to neuroscience research.

Students will attend lectures covering recent advances and techniques, and participate in relevant laboratory exercises with leading investigators from national and international institutions. This EMBO Practical Course is aimed at graduate and postgraduate students, but applications are welcome from students and investigators from all levels whose current or future work will benefit from gaining firsthand experience in the use of these model systems.
