About the Workshop

This EMBO Workshop brings together scientists from a broad range of disciplines who are interested in exploring and applying the basic physical principles that underlie the behavior of living cells. This extends from the protein scale up to the tissue level with input from the physical and the biological sciences. We hope to stimulate exchange of ideas between theoreticians and experimentalists, and between physicists, chemists and biologists. Participation of young and emerging scientists is highly encouraged and several slots are reserved for contributed lectures.

Topics include:

  • Phase transitions
  • Reconstituted systems
  • Synthetic Cells
  • Biomolecular condensates
  • Physics of chromosomes and the nucleus
  • Sensing and Information
  • Mechanics and dynamics of cells
  • Mechanics and dynamics of tissues and organoids

Students and postdocs not giving a talk are expected to participate through poster presentation.

For interested students we also offer a 1-day summer school on the morning and early afternoon of the first day (7th September), introducing the subjects of the conference to solidify the theoretical basis of the themes. To apply, please mark the corresponding field during registration.

Please apply early, as this meeting may become oversubscribed before the deadline.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

Zuiderduin has installed 1500 solar panels to drive two heat pumps that are used both for heating the hotel and the swimming pool with new efficient radiators. Most light switches have movement sensing and waste is separated.

We encourage participants to come by train. To foster this, all participants that come by train/bus will enter a lottery with sponsored prizes, such as water bottles with a PhysCell2026 logo. We also aim to offset the meeting’s CO2 footprint by offering CO2 compensations via accredited compensation brokers such as “Trees for all”.

Facilitated by the venue Zuiderduin, we will organize a beach clean-up activity for the workshop participants at the local beach.

Furthermore, we will on day 4 we integrated a discussion session about sustainability in science, aiming to invite a speaker on climate-related research, e.g. carbon sequestration. During this session, we will ask participants (1) to come up with suggestions to further reduce our meeting’s CO2 footprint and (2) to commit to the best suggestion (polling options).

Abstract books and programs will be shared in electronic form only.
