About the Workshop

Membrane-bound organelles, together with the cytoskeleton and the molecular motors, are responsible for the transport of intracellular components required for almost all cellular functions and communication across the lifespan of a eukaryotic cell. Emerging research shows that organelle contact sites and cytoskeletal interactions are key regulatory hubs critical for processes like metabolism, signalling, and protein trafficking. On the other side, disruptions in organelle dynamics are increasingly linked to neurodegeneration, cancer, and metabolic disorders. Cutting-edge imaging, molecular biology, and biophysical tools allow for the real-time tracking and manipulation of organelles. This improves our understanding of organelles in physiological and pathological contexts, offering new targets for therapeutic interventions in human diseases. By bringing complementary insights from the molecular machinery of organelles trafficking to its implications in synaptic function, immune signalling, and metabolic regulation, this EMBO Workshop will foster a unique interdisciplinary dialogue. This EMBO Workshop promises to be a landmark in unifying fundamental research on organelles and will bridge new collaborations, integrate knowledge across different disciplines, and drive innovation in therapeutic strategies targeting organelle dysfunction.

Regrettably, cancellations received less than 21 days prior to commencement of the conference are not eligible for a refund because the organisation must pay the venue regardless of whether or not you actually attend. Finally, if you cannot attend the entire conference for any reason, we will not be able to prorate your registration fees.

To cancel a registration please notify the organization committee by email.

Selection criteria

Every applicant is expected to present a poster or a short talk (if selected). Applicants should indicate their choice at abstract submission.

All abstracts will be reviewed by the organizers and an independent scientific board will review all short talk application. Each participant applying to short talk should additionally send a CV with publication list and motivation letter (150 words maximum). The selection will be based on the quality of the abstract submitted at the time of application. Only abstracts of appropriate scientific quality and themes relevant to the conference will be selected.

A threshold of 30% of total participant will be apply for locals to allow the event to be international. Although the first come, first served policy will be applied, a limited number of spots will be set aside for participants from low-income or developing countries to help them secure their attendance.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should include title, all authors, affiliations, and research summary. The research summary should be limited to 250 words.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

Transport

Getting to Edinburgh

By train from within the UK and nearby countries:

You can reach Edinburgh easily by train or long-distance bus/coach. From cities like London or Manchester, trains take just a few hours.

If you're travelling from continental Europe and wish to avoid flying, consider taking the Eurostar from Paris, Brussels, or Amsterdam to London. From there, continue by train to Edinburgh. Alternatively, you can travel by coach from major European cities to London, then take a train north.

Edinburgh Waverley Station is located in the city centre - about a 30-minute walk or 15-minute bus from the conference venue (see below).

By plane:

Edinburgh Airport has 150 destinations worldwide with regular flights from major UK cities (e.g. London, Manchester), many European (Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, etc.) and US cities (Washington, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, ...). For more information https://www.edinburghairport.com/flights/destinations

A convenient and often more sustainable option is to fly into a major UK hub (such as London or Manchester) and then travel to Edinburgh by train. This can reduce both costs and environmental impact. We strongly encourage the use of low-carbon travel options, such as trains and buses, whenever possible.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

We are committed to making this meeting as environmentally responsible as possible in all our activities. The venue, Pollock Estate, is powered by renewable energy and actively supports biodiversity through bee and insect hotels, native planting, and wildflower meadows. All food and drinks served will be Fairtrade and organically sourced, with deliveries made using fully-electric vehicles. Menus will also display their carbon footprint to raise awareness. Waste management on-site includes labelled recycling and compost bins, supported by trained “waste ambassadors”. Food waste will be collected for anaerobic digestion, producing renewable bio-methane. As innovative ideas to offset the CO2 footprint, we will ensure alignment with global sustainability benchmarks by monitoring emissions from venue use, meals, and logistics using a carbon footprint calculator from Green Events Tools to maintain an average of 10 kg CO₂/person/day. All participants will be offered to voluntarily offset their travel emissions by donating to the Scottish accredited carbon offsetting project “Trees for life”. Finally, we will invite Science Europe to present a booth and discuss with participants about their Greening Research action (https://www.scienceeurope.org/our-priorities/greening-research/) aiming at finding ways to reduce the ecological impacts of research activities. These actions underscore our strong commitment to sustainability and meaningful carbon reduction.
