About the Practical Course

Breakthroughs in developmental biology and stem cell research, alongside rapid advances in microscopy, computing, tissue engineering, and biophysics, are transforming our understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the formation of tissues, organs, and entire organisms. Yet, integrating this expanding body of knowledge remains a significant challenge — one that calls for deep interdisciplinary collaboration and a strong commitment to training the next generation of scientists at the interface between biology and physics.

The Optics, Forces & Development course is designed to address this need by offering a comprehensive, integrated program for a select group of early-career researchers. Combining theoretical lectures with hands-on practical sessions, the course covers key topics including the fundamentals of tissue development and engineering, advanced microscopy and image analysis, experimental approaches to study mechanical forces in morphogenesis, and the basics of mathematical modelling.

With a strong track record in Latin America — having held five successful editions (2013, 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2024) — OFD is now supported by EMBO. The upcoming edition will provide a vibrant platform for interdisciplinary training, fostering scientific exchange, regional and international collaboration, and helping meet the pressing need for high-level scientific education in Latin America.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

At the time of registration on the web platform, applicants need to provide:

  • A short CV
  • A one-page motivation letter providing educational background and explaining the reasons for attending the course
  • A reference letter from current supervisor or head of laboratory

Applicants will be initially ranked based on the CV, relevance of the course to their current research and/or scientific career, and the strength of the support from their direct supervisors. Among the highest ranked applicants, the criteria for final selection will include a combination of the following:

  • Country: 12-15 participants working in Latin America, with good coverage of different countries beyond Chile
  • Priority to advanced students at the doctoral and postdoctoral level. Undergraduate students could be selected exceptionally if they submit an outstanding application
  • Good coverage of different backgrounds to promote interdisciplinarity – developmental biology, biophysics, physics, mathematics, engineering
  • Gender balance – minority gender at least 40%

The selection of participants will be made by the meeting organisers

Abstract guidelines

Applicants should submit an abstract describing their current research projects (maximum 300 words, written in English).

Short Talks

Participants will present their current research projects in the form of short talks during the course. Short talk will last 8 minutes, plus 5 minutes for questions and answers.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of registration fee waivers and travel grants will be available for participants, which will be awarded primarily to students and postdoctoral researchers working in Latin American countries.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
