About the Workshop

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide. Meanwhile, non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are an increasing global health concern. NTM infections often resemble TB clinically, which can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate therapy. Additionally, drug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis and NTM exacerbate the global antimicrobial resistance crisis. A better understanding of the biology of mycobacterial pathogens and of the mechanisms underlying disease pathogenesis and transmission is critical to reduce their burden worldwide.

This EMBO Workshop is the fourth in a successful series held at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, following the meetings organized in 2012, 2016, and 2022. It will bring together scientists, clinicians, public health experts, and representatives from industry and non-profit organizations, who will share recent insights into mycobacterial infections, from fundamental discoveries to translational research, and their practical implications. The program will cover mycobacterial evolution, physiology, metabolism, host–pathogen interactions, immune responses, mechanisms of drug evasion, therapeutic strategies, vaccines, and diagnostics. Emerging experimental models, computational approaches, and artificial intelligence will also be addressed, showing how recent technologies contribute to advancing mycobacterial research and interventions.

The goal of this EMBO Workshop is to gather the mycobacteriology community from different regions, sectors, and career stages, fostering discussions across disciplines. This open dialogue will stimulate collaborations and inspire new ideas and strategies to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mycobacterial infections. By providing an inclusive environment for sharing knowledge, this EMBO Workshop aims to accelerate research and contribute to practical solutions to strengthen the control of TB and NTM infections worldwide.

Selection criteria

All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the Scientific Committee. Selection will be based on the scientific quality, novelty, and relevance of the research to the thematic sessions of the workshop. Abstracts may be chosen for oral presentations, poster presentations, or flash talks, while low-quality or off-topic abstracts will be rejected. The committee will also aim to ensure a balanced and diverse group of participants across career stages, gender, geographic regions, and scientific disciplines, with special attention to early-career researchers.

Abstract guidelines

All abstracts must be submitted online in English. The title should not exceed 20 words, and the abstract body should be no more than 350 words (excluding title, authors, and affiliations). Only accepted abstracts from participants with completed registration and payment will be included in the digital abstract book.
