About the Workshop

Modern lipid biology has evolved far beyond the traditional view of lipids as simple building blocks or energy substrates. Lipids are now recognised as dynamic regulators of biological structures and functions. This progress has been driven by remarkable advancements in technologies and experimental tools, which are uncovering new perspectives on lipid functions and their role in organising biological systems. To further advance the field, it is essential to unravel not only the collective properties of lipids but also their structural and functional interactions with proteins in complex biological processes. The EMBO Workshop "Lipid Code to Life" will bring together leading scientists and early-career researchers from diverse disciplines—including lipidomics, chemical biology, structural biology, and membrane biophysics—to discuss the latest discoveries in lipid functions, quality control, and lipid-protein interactions. This EMBO Workshop is designed to create a dynamic and collaborative environment where participants can exchange ideas, build networks, and foster collaborations. By bringing together expertise from a wide range of intersecting fields, our aim is to propel lipid biology forward, driving innovation, new synergies, and growth in this rapidly advancing area of research.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

All participants including faculty need to register and submit an abstract to be considered for participation in the workshop. The participants will be selected from the organizing committee on the basis of the submitted abstracts based on:

  1. Scientific excellence and content of the abstract representing the scope of the workshop
  2. The number of participants from the same institute may be capped

The organizers will ensure a balanced participation of senior PIs and early career scientists, especially graduate students and postdocs. Likewise, they will aim for a diverse group of scientists regarding gender and geographical location.
Each selected participant will be requested to present a poster. Outstanding abstracts will be selected for a oral presentations.

Abstract guidelines

  • Title
  • Authors and affiliations (Please specify the presenting author)
  • Maximum 250 words
  • Please indicate in the registration form whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation

Poster specifications

Poster format is A0 (84,1 × 118,9 cm or 33.1 x 46.8 inches).

Please take note that posters will be available for the whole duration of the meeting. Specific timeslots will be assigned for each participant to be present in person with his/her poster for direct scientific interaction.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

The CRTD building is equipped with solar panels that produces part of the electricity consumed in a renewable manner. Our goal is to further reduce the environmental impact by encouraging attendees to choose eco-friendly travel methods and by providing comprehensive information before, during, and after the event.

Our CO2 Footprint & sustainability initiatives are:

We will use a catering company that is committed on sustainability. Drinks will be provided in jugs or glass bottles, following the German Pfand system.

Minimizing energy use by relying on natural ventilation instead of air conditioning whenever possible; These efforts align with our commitment to hosting an environmentally responsible event while maintaining a high-quality experience for all participants.

We will minimize the use of printers and paper by having invoices, the final program, abstract booklet and all other information sent in a smart phone or tablet computer compatible version to all participants. In addition, we will recycle name tags or rather use simple fabric stickers.

We minimize transportation in Dresden: Hotels are in close proximity to Dresden Neustadt train station, which is just 15 min away to the airport. All hotels are directly connected to public transport and in walking distance to the venue.

We will encourage participants via e-mail and during the conference to donate to selected CO2 offset projects.
