About the Practical Course

Electron microscopy is a fundamental tool in cell biology, providing visualization of cellular structures at the highest possible resolution. The goal of this EMBO Practical Course is to guide participants from established methods of specimen preparation to novel and technically advanced approaches, including high-pressure freezing/freeze substitution, cryo-ultramicrotomy, and on-section immuno-gold labelling. This EMBO Practical Course places strong emphasis on hands-on training in advanced 3D acquisition and quantitation techniques, in particular transmission EM tomography, scanning EM array tomography, and serial block-face scanning EM. In addition, this EMBO Practical Course introduces stereology, a mathematical approach for quantifying cellular structures. Participants are encouraged to bring their own specimens and will receive project-driven training on how to integrate newly emerging techniques into a comprehensive research framework.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on their

  • Abstract
  • CV
  • Motivation letter

Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate they need electron microscopy for their research projects and can show potential to make an impact in their field using the skills obtained at the practical course. In line with the guidelines for EMBO Practical Courses, the event is primarily aimed at PhD students and early career researchers. However, applications from more senior scientists will also be considered if they can demonstrate a genuine need for the techniques taught. Senior technicians working in EM facilities may be accepted if they show a solid conceptual understanding of the projects they support. In exceptional cases, applicants from industry may also be considered.

Application guidelines

Abstract should not exceed 400 words (excluding authors, affiliations, and references). It should briefly introduce the biological question, summarize the so far results, outline the specific research aims, and indicate how the methods and techniques learned during the course will support the future progress of the project. Applicants should also specify the type of samples they plan to bring with them.

Motivation Letter should outline your relevant interests, skills, experiences and qualifications arguing why you are a suitable
candidate for the course. Explain your motivation for the course, and how you think you will benefit from the course. Indicate whether you will have access to EM equipment after the course. Describe how you plan to disseminate the acquired knowledge within your local scientific community.

PRESENTATIONS

Flash talks will be given on the first day of the course by all participants in the form of concise 7 minute presentations of their
projects, including the significance of planned EM experiments. Posters are optional. Participants may, if they wish, additionally
present their projects in the form of printed posters (maximum size DIN A0, portrait format) to encourage informal discussions. Posters will be displayed throughout the duration of the course.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

About the Area

České Budějovice or Budweis - is the capital of South Bohemian in the Czech Republic, located some 150 km south of the Czech capital Prague. It was founded in 1265 by Přemysl Otakar II and boasts a rich and eventful history. Naturally, Budweis is famous as a brewery town; beer has been brewed here since the 13th century. Currently there are two breweries in Budweis: Budvar, where the genuine Budweiser beer (not the American one!) has been brewed since the beginning of the 19th century, and Samson the town brewery, founded in 1795. The city, as well as the whole region of South Bohemia has many remarkable places ideal for sightseeing, two of them, the medieval town Český Krumlov and village Holašovice, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

The venue promotes energy efficiency by encouraging the use of public transportation.
