About the Workshop

The cellular response to DNA damage relies on a network of pathways activated upon genotoxic stress, including cell cycle checkpoints, DNA repair, DNA damage tolerance mechanisms, and the activation of innate immune responses. Defects in these processes lead to genomic instability, a fundamental driver of numerous inherited human disorders and age-associated diseases, most notably cancer, where the DNA damage response (DDR) represents an important therapeutic target. This EMBO Workshop will address the diverse sources of genomic instability and the molecular mechanisms that preserve genome integrity, spanning basic research on chromatin organisation to preclinical research using a range of approaches from biochemistry and structural methods to single-cell biology and animal models. It will further explore the links between genome maintenance pathways and human disease, as well as their potential for therapeutic intervention.

Selection criteria

In previous years this meeting has been oversubscribed. Participants will therefore be selected by the organizers based primarily on the submitted abstract. All applicants are expected to submit an abstract; alternatively, a brief CV may be considered in exceptional cases.

The criteria for selection will include:

  • Relevance of the research topic to the scope of the meeting
  • Scientific quality, rigor, and novelty of the submitted work
  • Contribution to a broad and balanced representation of the community, including diversity of laboratories, career stages, institutional backgrounds, and geographic regions

In order to avoid over-representation of individual laboratories and to ensure wide international participation, we will aim to include researchers from a diverse range of institutions and countries.

Abstract guidelines

Abstract should provide a brief overview of the work to be presented and no longer than 250 words.

Poster specifications

Poster size must not exceed 100cm (width) X 120cm (height).

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

We have secured sponsorship from the University of Bern to support compensations through CO2 offset projects. Participants are encouraged to mitigate their flights' carbon footprint by opting for the extra charge most airlines offer for CO2 offsetting. The selected venue is Green Key certified, recognizing its commitment to environmental sustainability. Located less than an hour's drive from Athens airport, the venue is accessible by public transport. Additionally, we have arranged bus transportation from the airport to the venue to reduce the need for individual taxi services.

We strongly encourage local participants from Greece to use public transport to attend the meeting. A discount on registration fees will be provided to attendees from outside Greece who travel by train. In our commitment to sustainability, single-use items will be avoided, and we will offer a diverse selection of delicious vegetarian meals for all attendees.
