About the Practical Course

This EMBO Practical Course is for participants who are interested in analysis of macromolecular structures in vitro and in situ using cryo-electron microscopy single particle reconstruction and tomography. The initial part of this EMBO Practical Course will cover instrumentation, and hands-on training on standard cryofreezing and cryosectioning methods, followed by automated data acquisition methods. The main part will have lectures, discussions and hands on training on single particle and tomographic reconstruction techniques. In addition, lectures and discussions on cutting edge aspects of integrative structural biology and machine learning based data processing methods in SPR and tomography will be included. This EMBO Practical Course is part of the biennial course series on cryoEM and tomography that is held in different parts of India, and structural biologists and cell biologists are highly encouraged to apply.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Cancellations after 31st December are not encouraged and registration fees will not be refunded. However, under special circumstances such as non-issuance of visa, organizers will take a case-by-case decision.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be shortlisted based on their CV, relevance of cryoEM in their research project and skills, and previous exposure to cryoEM SPR or tomography techniques.

Specifically, applications will be judged using the following criteria:

Applicant’s ability to comprehend the topics of the course.

Having preliminary data or exposure to electron microscopy/cryo-EM/tomography or expertise in macromolecular structure determination.

Requirement of cryo-EM-based tools in the applicant’s immediate and future research goals.

Student/Postdoctoral applicants will have to support their application with their supervisor’s reference letter. The applicant’s supervisor must send an email reference letter about the applicant to the email address: EMBO2026em@gmail.com quoting the applicant's application number, before the abstract submission deadline.

Submitted applications will be screened by members of the organizing committee based on the abstract for poster, motivation letter, CV and reference letter.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should have maximum of 250 words limit (excluding title, author list and affiliations). It should clearly state applicant’s research aims and highlight applicability of cryoEM methods to achieve them.

Poster specifications

Posters should be printed and presented in standard A0 size (portrait mode).

Further details on posters will be communicated directly to selected applicants.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 Euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.
