About the Workshop

The use of a handful of model organisms has proven essential for scientific discovery and to unlock new therapeutics to combat human disease. As society looks to the future, the gateway to new scientific discoveries will come partly by studying and learning from an ever-expanding range of species that have evolved clever solutions to exist and thrive in every conceivable environment on our planet. With the growing number of high-quality genome assemblies, advances in CRISPR technologies for genome editing, single-cell omics technologies, and new techniques for obtaining ESCs and iPSCs for in vitro investigation across cell types, the opportunities for non-model organisms to impact biomedical research have never been greater. Building on the previous EMBO Workshop, this meeting will continue to highlight how unconventional vertebrate models are becoming engines for new research directions in biomedicine. The workshop will bring together a diverse group of international experts working across a range of unconventional vertebrates with the aim to stimulate discussions, create new research bridges across fields and share technological expertise that will expand the research toolbox for these species. This EMBO Workshop will focus on tools and methods development, immunology and metabolism, reproduction and reproductive health, stem cells, tissue repair and regeneration, senescence and aging.

Selection criteria

Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

Participants submitting their abstract can apply for oral or poster presentations. The organising committee will then select a number of participants for short talks and poster presentations. Short talks selected from abstracts will be 15 min (10 min talk + 5 min Q&A). Among the abstracts selected for a poster, we will select a limited number for a 3-min flash talk before the poster sessions. We will announce the results of the selection process 2-3 weeks after the abstract submission deadline.

The selection criteria are:

  1. Quality and relevance of the participant’s research to the topics of the workshop
  2. Originality and novelty of the participant’s research (unpublished data are encouraged)
  3. The potential of the participant’s research to contribute to stimulating discussions or bring up important challenges
  4. The extent to which the applicant will benefit from the workshop (PhD students, postdocs, and early-stage PIs will have priority)

We will make every effort to recruit a diverse geographic, gender, and career-stage group of presenters and participants. Our commitment to a diverse speaker list is already reflected in our confirmed invited speakers which include researchers from four continents, 50% of which are female and 25% are early-stage researchers.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts must be written in English and include:

  1. Title in sentence case (only the first letter of the title and appropriate terms should be upper case).
  2. Authors (with presenting author underlined).
  3. Affiliations of authors (with each affiliation listed only once).
  4. Abstract body of one paragraph and no more than 350 words.

References and citations are not allowed.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.
