About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Subcortical sensory circuits play a fundamental role in the perception of the outside world. However, they are often thought of as relay stations that passively transmit sensory information to the cortex or simple effectors of behavioral reflexes. Recent studies, however, suggest that subcortical pathways also perform sophisticated computations, such as integrating peripheral information among many sensory pathways and the animal’s internal states. This meeting will gather leading researchers in the field to discuss different subcortical circuits involving various sensory modalities and revisit their increasingly complex and interconnected contributions to perception, behavior, and cognition. Furthermore, we will delve into various topics which often play an interconnected role with sensory perception and are crucial to a detailed yet holistic understanding of perceptual circuits.

Topics

  • Control of innate behavior
  • Image-forming visual processing by the thalamus
  • Circuits of the colliculus: vision and multisensory integration
  • Subcortical development in mice and non-human primates
  • Computational neuroscience and theory
  • Multisensory Integration and higher-order thalamic nuclei
  • The subcortical influence on decision making

Abstract guidelines

Abstract body: The limit of 350 words refers to manually typed text and excludes spaces. If an error occurs try using a different web browser (preferably Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).

If you copy-paste the text into the form, hidden formatting might still be included which may cause the text to exceed the 350 word limit resulting in an error message. We recommend you clear all formatting before pasting in the text. If you have special symbols in your text, make sure you are using Unicode characters, otherwise these will not be recognized.

Title: The title should not exceed 20 words. Only the first word of the title should start with a capital letter and the rest should be lowercase.

Authors and affiliations: Please fill in the author’s details as requested in the online form. Do not place the authors in the abstract text box, as that will cause errors in the abstract book. Please don’t forget to indicate who will be the presenter.

Poster specifications

The poster board size is 118 cm wide x 84 cm high (A0 landscape format).

Please create your poster so that it fits this poster board size.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. About the Area

Framed by the long, undulating hills of Umbria and the forests of Monte Subasio, Assisi is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world and one of Italy’s most captivating little towns.

Assisi is widely recognized for its postcard-like charm and uniquely preserved medieval buildings such as the Basilica di San Francesco. This basilica was built in year 1230 and exemplifies the Umbrian Romanesque style with Gothic influences, housing work from the most significant Italian artists of the 13th and 14th century. The town is also significant for its role in spreading the Franciscan Order, its central role as city-sanctuary continuing to the present day.

UNESCO collectively designated the Franciscan structures of Assisi as a World Heritage Site in 2000, making nearly the entire city a World Heritage Site and thus one of the most historically significant and picturesque Italian villages.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event.
