About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Cellular protein quality control consists of a sophisticated network of molecular chaperones, enzymes and protein degradation machineries that tightly regulate all aspects of the life cycle of a protein, including synthesis, folding/assembly, cellular localization, and disposal. Failures in the protein quality control system are associated with aging and age-associated diseases, such as the major neurodegenerative pathologies with protein aggregation.

This workshop will bring together scientists from different fields to cover all aspects of protein quality control, from the molecular up to the cellular and organismal level. We aim to discuss - in an inclusive and open atmosphere - novel and non-canonical mechanisms of protein quality control, including its dysfunctions underlying disease.

Participants will have the chance to interact in a stimulating environment with researchers from different disciplines and career stages to ensure the dissemination of their research findings and learn about the newest advances. The program is designed to accelerate scientific progress and facilitate the development of translational applications in medicine and biotechnology.

The workshop takes place at the northern coast of Crete, at the enchanting town of Hersonissos at the Aegean Sea, close to the world-famous archaeological site of Knossos Palace.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on their submitted abstracts or, if no poster or short talk is to be presented, on their cv/affiliation (for principal investigators) or motivation letter (for students/post-docs). We will aim for a broad coverage of countries, institutions, and research fields. We will also pay attention to achieving a good balance between scientists at different stages of their careers.

Please be aware that the number of participants is limited and it is therefore possible that the workshop will fill up before the registration deadline.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and should include a title, all author names and their full affiliations. The name of the poster/short-talk presenter should be underlined.

Poster specifications

Posters should be portrait orientation. Poster board dimensions are 1.00 m x 1.00 m with an actual display area of 94 cm height x 80 cm width.

Poster presenters are responsible for mounting and removal of their posters. They are expected to be available at their poster for discussion during their assigned session.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Sustainability measures at the meeting

The organizers support measures to reduce the environmental impact of this workshop.

In recent years the Aldemar Knossos Royal Hotel has substantially improved its environmental performance focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy (photovoltaic), water conservation, waste minimisation and sustainable procurement. All these functions are reviewed annually and clear conservation goals are set.

Invited speakers and participants are encouraged to donate to CO2 offset projects for air travel.

About the Area

ALDEMAR KNOSSOS ROYAL is a luxury 5* beachside hotel with conference center.

Minoan-style architecture combined with recently refurbished rooms, gleaming swimming pools and lush gardens provide relaxing surroundings.

Hersonissos (Greek: Χερσόνησος, meaning “peninsula”), also transliterated as Chersonissos and Hersónisos, is a town and a local government unit in the north of Crete, bordering the Mediterranean / Aegean Sea. The town is about 25 kilometers east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos. What is usually called Hersonissos is in fact its peninsula and harbour. It is part of the Heraklion regional unit.

At the modern settlement of Hersonissos is the site of the ancient town of Chersonesos, an important seaport from Classical Greece through Byzantine times that served the city of Lyttos. The contemporaneous port is built over the remains of the Roman port. Some traces of those remains, most of them submerged, are still visible in some places. On the seaside street there is a pyramidal Roman fountain with mosaics of fishing scenes. On the top of the rocky hill behind the port stand the ruins of an early Christian basilica with floor mosaics.

The vicinity of Hersonissos is noted for its prehistoric archaeological finds. On the coast approximately one kilometer to the east of Hersonissos was an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Britomartis.
