About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Sleep science is at an exciting juncture. The realization that sleep is near universal among animals has revolutionized the field. The ubiquity of sleep extends to the discovery of different sleep stages in diverse taxa, and to conserved functions for sleep in memory consolidation and re-modelling of synapses.

This meeting stands out for highlighting emerging areas in sleep research and for the diversity of model systems covered. We feature talks on sleep in non-traditional models such as pigs, deer, birds, and cephalopods in addition to in addition to genetic model systems including mice, flies, fish and nematodes. Our program includes a session on the comparative biology of sleep, highlighting insights from studying sleep in natural settings. In addition, we feature talks on emerging topics that are not typically featured in sleep conferences. These include sleep functions for neural computation, the development of sleep circuits, quiet and active sleep in invertebrates, and the role of glia.

By bringing people together from different sub-fields we hope to spark discussion and debate amongst people who are otherwise too frequently siloed in sub-communities. Thus, through this conference, we hope to highlight recent discoveries and think collectively about future directions for the field.
