About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

The brain is a high energy-demanding tissue with an heterogenous cellular composition. Most of the energy consumed is used for maintenance of neuronal synaptic transmission, and neurons almost exclusively rely on mitochondrial respiration. In addition, accumulating evidence over the past decades reveals that mitochondria not only play a fundamental role for brain metabolism, but that they are also important regulators of neurodevelopment and brain plasticity. The centrality of mitochondrial function in the nervous system is further underscored by the prevalence of neurological disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. In addition, mitochondria have now also been identified as major drivers of neuroinflammation and brain aging.

Very recently, the development of new techniques and approaches (such as brain organoids, cell-type specific mitochondrial profiling or super-resolution imaging- to just name a few) have enabled exciting discoveries in the field. Much progress has been made over the last years to unravel the molecular machineries ensuring mitochondrial homeostasis in the brain. These findings now provide novel avenues to untangle how mitochondrial dysregulation promotes neuropathology.

The main goal of this workshop is to bring together – for the first time – the large number of scientists addressing the pleiotropic roles of mitochondria in neurons and glia cells.

About the Area

Engelberg-Titlis is a famous holiday destination in Central Switzerland, offering a unique vacation experience. Situated 25 kilometers south of Lake Lucerne, Engelberg lies in a spacious high valley at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the 3,239-meter-high Titlis glacier and the 2,600-meter-high Hahnen. During winter, these mountains ensure snowfall well into spring, making Engelberg renowned for its diverse skiing and freeriding opportunities. In summer, the focus shifts to hiking, mountaineering, climbing, biking, and golfing. The destination boasts a well-developed infrastructure and excellent public transport connections.

Engelberg itself stands out with its distinctive and traditional character. The Benedictine monastery, founded in 1120, continues to shape village life, with monks still residing, working, and teaching there. Historic houses from the Belle Époque era serve as reminders of the past, while the combination of charming Swiss flair and unique architecture lends the monastery village its special appeal.
