About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

The liver and pancreas arise from a common developmental origin and are controlled by shared gene regulatory programs. These organs are central to two of the most common and devastating metabolic diseases worldwide, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as to autoimmune type 1 diabetes. In depth understanding of the causal mechanisms of these diseases promises to open new therapeutic avenues. On the other hand, the prospect of delivering replacement therapies for liver failure, genetic disorders, and autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes fuels some of the most impressive advances in cellular and organ bioengineering approaches.

This EMBO Workshop provides a unique forum bringing together scientists working at the forefront of liver and pancreatic endocrine biology and disease. It will discuss progress in our understanding of biological mechanisms underlying human metabolic diseases, as well as development of novel therapeutic strategies. It will span topics such as organ modeling, novel genomic technologies, gene regulation, human genetics, disease-relevant molecular and developmental processes, and genetic and cell replacement therapies. It has a highly multidisciplinary programme to promote collaborative and cross-fertilizing interactions. Each session will engage scientists working on both organs, with contributions from outside speakers from diverse academic and industry backgrounds. Numerous speakers will be selected from submitted abstracts.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on the relevance of their abstracts to the meeting Gender, career status and place of work will also be taken into account during the selection process, in order to actively increase the diversity of participants.

In the event of the workshop being oversubscribed, the organizing committee will select participants based on the following criteria:

  1. Scientific content of the abstract
  2. Scientific relevance of the abstract to the conference
  3. Number of participants from the same lab
  4. Date of application

Abstract guidelines

The selected participants will be requested to present a poster. In addition, a number of abstracts will be selected for a short talk. Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation during submission.

Abstracts are limited to 300 words, excluding title, authors and affiliations. Abstracts should not include any references. All abstracts must be submitted online and in English.

Applicants are welcome to submit abstracts on these topics (but not limited to):

  • Genetic mechanisms of pancreatic and/or liver metabolic disease
  • Gene regulation in the context of pancreatic and/or liver physiology and disease
  • In vitro modeling of disease
  • Therapeutic avenues for MASH or diabetes
  • Pancreas and liver development and cell differentiation
  • Spatial and multiomic approaches to study disease processes
  • High-content & high-throughput functional assays

Poster specifications

The dimensions for the poster should be A0 size (841mm width x 1189mm height, absolute maximum is 950 mm width x 1750 mm height).

Each participant presenting a poster will give a brief oral presentation (details will be communicated in due time).

There are no poster printing facilities on site, so please check with your airline how poster rolls can be transported.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
