About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Parasitic infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The vast majority of parasitic infections in humans and domestic animals can be attributed to protozoan pathogens, including those causing malaria, African sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, or toxoplasmosis. Parasitism is found throughout the tree of life and parasitic organisms have become model systems for the study of biochemistry and molecular biology. They also represent valuable systems for integrated analyses of host-pathogen interplay.

This workshop will showcase the latest breakthroughs in host-parasite interactions, host manipulation and immune evasion, pathogenesis, parasite cell biology, parasite molecular biology and signaling, vaccination and control strategies. The conference will cover multiple parasites (Plasmodium, Babesia, Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, Trichomonas, Trypanosoma, Leishmania, Shistosoma) and provide an outstanding opportunity to share cutting-edge science. This meeting will represent a stimulating environment to exchange ideas and envisage novel approaches to control pathogenic parasites.

Selection criteria

Candidates for oral or poster presentation will be selected on the quality of the abstract in terms of the summary of the results, data and potential scientific contribution to the relative fields and to the EMBO Workshop. This information should be based on the general subject areas covered by the workshop.

The information used to decide on accepting the abstract will be the content, which should be based on an important aspect of parasitology. The information to be used will also be based on quality, clarity and focus of the description of the work and whether the abstract covers one or more of the following domains; Molecular parasitology, molecular biology, modification of host immunity, immunity, diverse and virulence specific differentiation, parasite escape, expression of pathogenic molecules, epigenetics, control of gene expression, antigenic variation, metabolic pathways, drug discovery, epidemiology and vector biology.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts are limited to 350 words (body of text) and should be submitted through the application system.

Only registered participants are eligible to submit an abstract.

The abstract book will be available online in open access after the meeting.

Poster specifications

Poster boards are 2 m high x 1 m wide (portrait orientation). Posters should be A0 format portrait.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

To apply, please send an email directly to the meeting organisers justifying your request.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accesibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

Sustainability measures at the meeting

The venue actively enhances its energy efficiency by investing in advanced energy-saving technologies. It actively promotes energy conservation by engaging both staff and guests through awareness initiatives. Additionally, it minimizes water consumption by integrating efficient technologies and encouraging guests to use water responsibly, such as limiting towel washing through informative messages in bathroom facilities.

The venue is Green Key certified, an international eco-label awarded to establishments committed to sustainable practices, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and environmental awareness.

The majority of meals will be offered in a buffet format, helping to reduce food waste, optimize resources and energy, and promote the use of local and seasonal products.

Abstract books and programs will be shared in electronic form only.
