About the Workshop

Join us for the highly anticipated third EMBO workshop on Enhancer Mechanics and Enhanceropathies! Building on the success of our previous meetings in Santander (2021) and Marseilles (2023), this event continues to explore groundbreaking advancements in our understanding of transcriptional enhancers and their critical roles in human health and disease.

The workshop will bring together leading experts focusing on the basic mechanisms of transcriptional enhancers and chromatin structure, and experts focusing on how the dysregulation of enhancer function contributes to human diseases.

The first session (I) will be focused on the role of enhancers during development and will include highly renowned speakers that will set the stage and also provide a historical perspective on enhancers and long-range gene regulation. Then, during the second day we will have three sessions (II, III and IV) that will be focused on novel insights into various aspects enhancer mechanics, including enhancer dynamics, grammar and 3D chromatin architecture. Finally, the last 2 days will focus on the role of enhancers in human disease. Session V will be dedicated to novel enhancer-related pathomechanisms, and sessions VI & VII will cover current approaches to investigate the importance of enhancer dysregulation in the aetiology of cancer and complex diseases.

Selection criteria

As we have moved to a larger venue compared to the previous meetings, we expect to be able to host everyone signing up. However, should we be required to select applicants, the main criteria for the selection of the participants will be the scientific quality of the submitted abstracts as well as the relevance and complementarity to the planned scientific sessions. Furthermore, we will pay attention to:

  • Geographical balance with participation from as many different countries and institutions as possible
  • Gender balance
  • Fair seniority distribution with preferably >50% junior participants (PhD students, postdocs and young PIs)

The organizers will select 16 abstracts for short talks

Abstract guidelines

Your abstract should be written in English and contain the following information:

  • Title
  • Authors and affiliations (the presenting author should be underlined)
  • Maximum abstract length is 350 words. It should contain a clear description of the results that will be presented, their biological significance and impact, and the methods employed to obtain the results. Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Transport

Hindsgavl Slot is a castle located at the heart of Denmark. It is easy to get there whether you arrive by road or rail. Nearest airports are Billund (BLL) and Copenhagen/Kastrup (CPH).

By train

Leave the train at Middelfart railway station. The station is about 3 km from the castle. You can walk via Brovejen until you see “Hindsgavl Slot” signposted on the left. You can also choose to take a taxi. There is usually a taxi waiting outside the station. If not, call Middelfart Taxa. The number is +45 64 41 40 55.

By car from Jutland

If you travel from Jutland on the motorway, the fastest route is often to take exit 59 Fredericia S. At the end of the ramp, turn left and continue to the T-junction. Now turn left to cross the Old Little Belt Bridge. After a couple of kilometres, there are signs. Turn right to “Hindsgavl Slot”.

By car from Zealand

If you travel from Funen and Zealand on the motorway, take exit 58a Middelfart Ø. Follow the signs to Middelfart (through several roundabouts). Continue straight on for several kilometres, then follow the signs left to “Hindsgavl Slot”. When there is heavy traffic in Middelfart, your satellite navigation device may possibly guide you across the New Little Belt Bridge (via the motorway) to Jutland and back to Funen across the Old Little Belt Bridge.

About the Area

Hindsgavl Castle is situated on the northwestern part of the central island Funen, close to the town of Middelfart. The surrounding landscape is some of Denmark’s finest, and from the foot of the main building there is a great view to the glittering waters of Little Belt and the castle park. Outside the castle’s land you find Hindsgavl Dyrehave, a deer park consisting of 165 acres of fenced area.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here.

Our location is within walking distance from Middelfart train station, which is geographically well situated between the two major airports in Denmark.

We encourage speakers within a reasonable distance to make the entire trip by train. At least one of our invited speakers from abroad will give her talk remotely to save on travel.

Participants are encouraged to offset the CO2 footprint from the flights by paying the extra charge offered by most airlines, and in general be conscious about the environmental impact of their travel.

The venue works actively on sustainability across various areas to minimize their environmental impact and foster responsible operations. Areas include reduction in food waste, CO2 Emissions (transition to more plant-based diet, local ingredients, vegetables from the castle’s own garden, venison from the surrounding nature park, and focus on reduction of carbon footprint connected with food production and transport), circularity and energy savings.

Catering will include vegetarian meals from locally sourced ingredients, and bottled water has been replaced by water dispensers with high quality Danish tap water.

Abstract books and programs will be shared in electronic form only.
