About the Practical Course

Circular RNAs (CircRNAs) are a rediscovered class of RNA species that originate from back-splicing events, which have been reported across all domains of life. Many circRNAs are stable, abundant and conserved between species. They exhibit context-dependent expression patterns, which are often linked to disease states. Validated circular RNA functions are numerous and range from regulation of transcription and splicing to RNA/protein sponging and scaffolding. However, CircRNAs are by-an-large the most under-explored class of all non-coding RNAs. This course will meet the specific need to explore complexity, distribution, function, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic use of circRNAs, both experimentally and computationally.

This EMBO Practical Course focuses on cutting-edge methods and approaches that are widely applicable to all organisms beyond standard models. Lectures will cover the technological background of circular RNA research and present the latest advancements from biology, chemistry and medicine. The practical part will include detection and quantification of circRNAs by low- and high-throughput methods, data analysis and integration as well as comprehensive computational assessment of circRNA candidates, function prediction and experimental design of follow-up experiments. Each building block features extensive Q&A and troubleshooting slots with emphasis on best practice. Finally, group activities and networking opportunities will create a unique experience.

About the Area

Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, Trento is a picturesque city known for its rich history and vibrant culture. Situated at the base of Monte Bondone, Trento boasts a stunning medieval city center, where historic architecture meets lively piazzas and charming streets. The city is renowned for its beautiful cathedral, the Castello del Buonconsiglio, and various museums and cultural institutions celebrating its ancient past.

Surrounding Trento, the natural landscape is equally captivating. The nearby Val d'Adige valley, with its lush vineyards and apple orchards, stretches along the Adige River, offering breathtaking views and outdoor activities. In the winter, Monte Bondone transforms into a popular skiing destination, while in the summer, it becomes a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

To the west of Trento lies the Valle dei Laghi, or "valley of lakes," a serene region with stunning lakes such as Toblino, Terlago, and Santa Massenza. This area is known for its enchanting scenery, vineyards, and quaint villages, making it a perfect escape for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.

Further afield, the majestic Dolomites rise to the north, offering some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its dramatic peaks, hiking trails, and ski resorts. Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for adventure and exploration in this alpine paradise.

To the south, Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, presents a striking contrast with its Mediterranean-like climate, crystal-clear waters, and charming lakeside towns. The lake is a popular destination for water sports, sailing, and relaxing by the shore, with picturesque villages like Riva del Garda providing a perfect backdrop.

Sustainability at the meeting

Venue:

The University of Trento is implementing a plan for environmental sustainability, which includes practical measures such as sourcing electricity from renewable energy. In addition, it has launched a campain #soloquantoserve (“only when needed”) to encourage the reduction of energy consumption in daily actions (https://www.unitn.it/green).

Travel:

The meeting participants will use public buses to go from the hotel to the venue and back. The hotel is located near the main bus station and the train station, at a 2 min walk, eliminating the use of taxis. Some speakers will travel by train and/or give a talk remotely. Participants will be incentivized to travel by train with a reward (free sample processing at Genecore).

CO2 offsetting:

Speakers and participants are encouraged to donate to CO2 offset projects. The use of hard copies will be kept to a strict minimum. Energy-efficient products (plasticware etc.) with an “A” label (EU Energy Label) will be selected. Any data stored in the cloud upon course completion will be erased to reduce our digital footprint.
