About the Workshop

The cytoplasm is a highly specialized material where a multitude of different chemical processes occur simultaneously. The cytoplasm can also store information and change its properties in response to environmental changes. This complex behavior is enabled by a high degree of compartmentalization. The physical properties of the cytoplasm such as a high degree of macromolecular crowding affects diffusion and contributes to the formation of biomolecular condensates (BCs). The discovery of BCs has transformed our understanding of cellular organization. BCs act as micro/nano-compartments with unique physico-chemical properties, creating a diverse cellular landscape that influences crucial processes like signal transduction, protein synthesis, and cytoskeleton dynamics.

Unraveling how fundamental properties of the cytoplasm are regulated and how they affect the organization and function of the cytoplasm necessitates a collaborative effort across disciplines. Recent technological advancements offer unprecedented precision in measuring cell properties like volume, mass or crowding. In addition, newly developed proteomic and optical tools allow deep insights into the organization of the cytoplasm.

Bringing together biologists, bio-physicists and material scientists will accelerate progress in understanding the complex cytoplasm, unlocking the potential to not only interfere with disease but also to create smart synthetic materials.

This EMBO Workshop on “CELLULAR MATTERS” will focus on the cytoplasm and revolve around three main subjects:

  1. The cytoplasm as a complex material: Regulation of physico-chemical properties and its impact on the proteome and cytoplasm organization
  2. Emergent properties of the cytoplasm: Bio-condensates and Cytoskeleton
  3. Developing new analytical tools and smart materials inspired by the cytoplasm.

The attendees will be selected by the scientific organizing committee based on scientific excellence and relevance. In addition, the same criteria used to select the invited speakers (diversity in gender, geography and career stage) will be applied. Attendees from industry (at most 2 admitted) and editors of scientific journals are welcome to join our meeting.

The top scoring abstracts for each session will be selected to deliver an oral presentation (15 mins + 5 mins Q&A for a total of 20 mins). The rest of the abstracts will be assigned poster presentations. The top 10 of the ones selected for each posters session will also have the opportunity to give a flash talk (2 min each) in the plenary session.

Those applicants whose abstract will not be selected and/or cannot be accommodated on-site will be given the opportunity to participate virtually (for a small registration fee) and benefit from the lectures through online broadcasting.

Transport

The Swiss public transportation system takes you almost everywhere and is very reliable.

Detailed information on airports and public transport to reach the Congress Center can be found here.

BY PLANE

If you fly, the most convenient airports are Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH) and Milano Malpensa, Italy (MXP).

Trains connect both airports to Locarno.

From Zurich Airport to Locarno train station: less than 2.5 hrs; 30-min frequency

From Milano Malpensa Airport to Locarno train station: less than 2.5 hrs; hourly frequency.

BY TRAIN

If you travel by train the closest train station is Locarno. Train timetable available on SBB, https://www.sbb.ch/en

PUBLIC BUS (from Locarno railway station)

Take Bus Nr. 1 from Locarno railway station to Ascona (linea 1 – Corsia C), stop "Ascona Centro" and then walk to Monte Verità (approximately 25 minutes): head towards the Post Office, continue along "Via del Borgo" to the Boutique Hotel & Ristorante Antica Posta, turn right towards "Scalinata della Ruga". At the end of the steps continue along "Strada Collina" until you reach the entrance of the Fondazione Monte Verità.

SHUTTLE BUS

A free 8-seater bus shuttle between the Locarno train station and Monte Verità will be available for 4 to 5 hours on the day of arrival and departure to take the participants from/to the train station to/from the venue, first-come first-served basis.

TAXI

Various taxis are available at Locarno railway station. The company "EcoTaxi"
usually uses hybrid vehicles and has a slightly lower price (current fare 26 CHF, up to 4 people between 6 am and 10 pm + 4 CHF night hours - might change). The EcoTaxi can be pre-booked or contacted upon arrival: +41 91 792 21 01 (all numbers) or 0800 321 321 (free call from Swiss numbers). The ride takes around 15 mins. Since many people will arrive with the same trains it could be a good idea to look around for fellow participants and share the ride.

About the Area

The EMBO workshop will take place at Monte Verità a state-of-the-art conference and cultural center (https://www.monteverita.org/en/monte-verita/monte-verita).

Monte Verità rises on the hills above Ascona and Lake Maggiore and has always been a magnetic pole of convergence of ideas, trends, experiments and historical figures. An alternative and vegetarian colony of the early twentieth century, since 1989, it has housed the center Congressi Stefano Franscini, which in draws top researchers from different disciplines and from all over the world to Monte Verità every year.

Monte Verità has a very welcoming campus-like structure, offering lodging, conference halls, restaurant in a beautiful park.

LECTURE HALLS

The oral sessions will take place in the “Auditorium” while the posters will be set up in the Sala Balint and will stay up for the full duration of the event.

RESTAURANT

All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided in the Luce Dining Room.

LODGING

Monte Verità cannot accommodate all participants within its campus thus extra rooms have been booked at a nearby Hotel (walking distance).

Consistently with the spirit of the workshop the attendees will be expected to share rooms unless serious reasons with documented proof are provided.

The number of beds at Monte Verità is not enough to accommodate all participants so some will be staying at a Hotel nearby (walking distance). The rooms at Monte Verità will be assigned first on a first-registered first-served basis. No matter where you will be lodging, all meals, including breakfast, will be taken together at Monte Verità.

The number of single rooms is limited and only available at the Hotel (not at Monte Verità) and precedence will be given to people with documented needs and then on a first-registered, first-served basis.

For an aerial view of the Monte Verità complex watch this YouTube video.

More information on the venue can be found here.

More information on its history can be found here and about its museum here.

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here: https://www.embo.org/conferences-training/sustainable-conferencing/

At this meeting:

The venue takes energy efficiency measures and can be reached by public transportation.

ALL meals will be vegetarian with the exception of the banquet dinner where a choice between a vegetarian and a non-vegeterian meal will be given.

ALL participants and especially the invited speakers are asked to fly only when strictly necessary. In case a flight needs to be taken only economy class will be reimbursed to the invited speakers.

ALL participants from Europe are strongly encouraged to travel by train and in second class whenever possible and their commitment to only use public transportation will be rewarded.

ALL communications, as well as the program and the abstract book will only be distributed electronically.

ALL advertising will only be done digitally (website, mailing lists, social media).

Participants are reminded to bring to the conference their own water bottles as the Auditorium will be equipped with a water dispenser and single use cups will not be provided.

For the badges, in case plastic ones are used, they will be collected at the end of the conference to be reused.

The participants will be offered the possibility to make a voluntary contribution that the organizers will donate to a CO2 offset certified program.

To give the opportunity to all applicants to participate, those whose abstract will not be selected and/or cannot be accommodated on-site will be given the opportunity to attend the lectures online.

We will have an information session about the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), an international laboratory sustainability program initiated by University College London (UCL). Several of the organizing labs are actively taking part in this initiative.
