About the Workshop

This EMBO Workshop follows the enthusiastic response to the conference organized in 2017. It responds to the need to revisit the structural and functional organization of cells in order incorporate and address two aspects:

  1. New emerging concepts in membrane traffic: The study of membrane compartments has traditionally focused on single organelles or pathways. Yet, new insights into inter- organelle communication, membrane-less compartments, organelle-dependent regulation of metabolism, physical principles such as self-organization and mechanics in membrane structure and function, prompt us to pursue a more integrated view of sub-cellular organization.
  2. Integrate membrane traffic and membrane biology to a higher level of organization, such as tissues and organisms. Cell biology has to go beyond cells in culture and contribute to the analysis of multi-cellular organisms, during development and in the adult. In this workshop, we aim to gain an integrative and multi-scale perspective of the molecular mechanisms from the sub-cellular to tissue/organism levels. We propose to organize this innovative workshop that can help addressing these challenges. It will therefore focus on new research advances on cytoplasm organization both at the molecular level and subcellular level and bridge it to adjacent fields, such as disease, physics, metabolism and tissue development.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

We will give preference to young researchers from Europe, in particular young lab heads (less than 5 years independent positions), postdoctoral fellows and PhD students. The selection from this group of applicants will be based on the quality of the science outlined in the abstract. We will also consider selecting individuals whose research would substantially benefit from attending this workshop.

In the event of the workshop being oversubscribed, the organizing committee will select individual participants based on the following criteria:

1. Scientific content of abstract

2. Scientific relevance of conference to participant’s own work

3. Number of participants from the same lab and

4. Date of application.

Abstract guidelines

All selected participants will be requested to present a poster. In addition, a number of abstracts will be selected for a short talk. Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Applicants are welcome to submit abstracts on these topics (but not limited to):

  • The secretory pathway and unconventional secretion
  • Trafficking and disease
  • Endosomal/ lysosomal pathway and beyond
  • Regulation by signaling mechanisms
  • The inter-organelle communication at membrane contact sites, their role in lipid transfer and autophagy
  • Signaling, membrane traffic and metabolism
  • Membrane mechanics

All abstracts must be submitted in English.

Poster specifications

The format of the poster will be communicated in due time.

Each person will give a brief oral presentation. In addition, participants may display ‘virtual posters’ (e.g. live demonstration of research on presenter's laptop).

Additional Requirements

For postdoctoral fellows and PhD students, we will ask for a letter of recommendation from their supervisor to help clarify the benefits attending the workshop will have for their career.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accessibility Grants

EMBO Courses & Workshops offers accessibility grants to support participants with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

PPlease indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the accessibility grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Sustainability

Catering will include vegetarian and vegan options, locally sourced ingredients, and bottled water or single-use wares will be avoided.

Participants are requested to offset the CO2 footprint from the flights by paying the extra charge offered by most airlines.

Abstract books and programs will be shared in electronic form only.
