About the Practical Course

Bioremediation, a set of technologies based on the ability of (micro)organisms to neutralize or degrade pollutants, is widely used in the Northern hemisphere but remains underutilized in South America. Chile, in particular, suffers from severe environmental contamination due to a dearth of awareness and technological resources, hindering the application of these promising technologies. This EMBO practical course “Contaminated site remediation with genomics: boosting bioremediation in South America” will train new scientists about the use of molecular techniques for bioremediation. These cutting-edge techniques enable the comprehension of microbial metabolisms, the design of effective bioremediation strategies and their monitoring. The course, hosted by Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and Universidad de Playa Ancha (both located in Valparaiso), offers complementary expertise in bioremediation, including the development of biomarkers for contaminated site assessment and biodegradation process monitoring, as well as the isolation and genomic characterization of microorganisms involved in biodegradation. Participants will take part in both field and laboratory activities and will process molecular data in the bioinformatic sessions. This course is designed for graduated students and professionals in Environmental Biotechnology and related fields, offering an opportunity to learn innovative techniques, to expand knowledge, and to enhance skills in bioremediation. A virtual roundtable with stakeholders will foster crucial interactions among the scientific community, public authorities, companies, and Chilean citizens, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges. This roundtable will create a unique moment of interaction of different parties and will allow the participants to understand the actuality of this topic.

Payment

Upon acceptance, participants will receive an email with payment details. The following payment options will be available: bank transfer, PayPal. Any bank transfer fee will be on the participant.

Cancellation policy

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance to the course on the 31st of July 2025. In case they want to cancel their attendance to the course, the notification must be sent by the 10th of August 2025 to the organizers.

Selection criteria

Maximum 25 participants are allowed. PhD students, postdocs, academics (i.e. young career researchers) and private practitioners (industry) can apply.

The selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • Motivation letter (half a page, A4) and short CV (1 page, A4) as a single PDF.
  • Fair distribution of applicants from different countries and scientific institutes.
  • Fair gender distribution.
  • Previous experience in bioremediation or related topics (optional criteria).

The motivation letter should not exceed half an A4 page, and the short CV should not exceed one A4 page. They must be provided as a single PDF document.

For participants in the hybrid portion of the event only, a separate registration link will be provided, and they will receive a specific certificate of attendance based on the sessions they attended.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts for posters must be sent upon registration written in English and should not exceed 500 words. The abstract will not be used as a selection criteria.

Poster specifications

The poster session will be virtual, 5-minute presentations, 3 slides. Details will be provided to accepted applicants.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Accesibility grants

EMBO offers accessibility grants to support participants at EMBO Courses & Workshops with any access needs. These grants cover up to 500 euros for any additional costs e.g. to adapt the conference environment, or to be accompanied by someone to assist them where necessary.

Participants with access needs may apply for a grant via the registration system of the related EMBO event, or by emailing the organizers of the related EMBO event directly.

Sustainability measures at the meeting

Some invited speakers from other continents are asked to give their talks remotely to save on travel.

Catering will include vegetarian meals and locally sourced ingredients.
