About the Workshop

The EMBO Workshop Astrocytes: From Molecules to Systems is the first international meeting dedicated to astrocytes. The diverse molecular and biochemical profiles and functions of astrocytes pose unprecedented technological and conceptual challenges in both fundamental and translational neurosciences. Addressing astrocyte pathophysiology requires a multidisciplinary approach, fostering collaboration across fundamental, translational, and computational neuroscience. In this context, a comprehensive panel of speakers will offer complementary perspectives on astrocyte research. The workshop will provide a 360-degree view of the current state of astrocyte science and aims to strengthen the research community by facilitating discussions on a roadmap for the next decade. This EMBO Workshop on Astrocytes will take place in April 2025 in Venice, Italy, at the exclusive venue of Venice International University on San Servolo Island.

Satellite Event

EMBO Satellite Meeting on "Quantitative Astrocyte Physiology by Models from Genome to Circuits," at the University of Padua (Padua, Italy), April 10–11, 2025.

A two-day intensive course about computational modeling of astrocytes, introducing multidisciplinary approaches to model the many scales of astrocyte physiology — from genes to cognitive functions — curated by Drs. Maurizio De Pitta and Laura Civiero. For more information, visit the website here.

Selection criteria

Participation in the conference is limited to 160 attendees. The primary selection criterion is the quality of the scientific work. A scientific committee, composed by the Organizers and workshop speakers, will evaluate submitted abstracts based on their relevance to the astrocyte field and alignment with the workshop topics. The presentation of unpublished data is encouraged and will be given priority.

An essential guiding principle in the selection process is ensuring equality, diversity, and inclusion, with special consideration for participants with disabilities. We will also ensure gender balance, diversity in career stages, and geographical representation.

We strongly encourage participation from PhD students and postdocs. Selected abstracts will be chosen either for short talks, flash talks and/or poster sessions.
