About the Practical Course

In the last 5 years, the scientific community has witnessed the development of several AI-based tools for groundbreaking advances in protein science. These tools have enabled scientists to predict protein structures from sequence alone, design new-to-nature protein structures, build de novo protein structures around small molecules, design optimized protein sequences for an input protein structure and generate de novo protein sequences following the principles of natural ones.

The Latin American Workshop on AI for Protein Design (AI4PD) will bring together experts in computational protein engineering and design from academia and industry, with the aim of training students and postdocs with limited prior experience in this field and for which learning this tools can have a positive impact in their current and future research.

This training will be delivered through keynote lectures by renowned scientists working on computational protein engineering and design using AI, followed by hands-on training for all attendees via tutorials on AI-based tools such as AlphaFold2, RoseTTAFold, RFDiffusion, ProteinMPNN, Frame2seq and others.

This training will be completed with a Hackathon, in which the attendees will gain prowess in the use of these tools for designing their own proteins. In this way, this EMBO practical course will enable attendees to implement these AI tools as a routine component of their protein engineering and design campaigns.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

The organizing committee will choose up to 40 students and postdoctoral fellows among the applications to attend this workshop, based on their CV, current knowledge, relevance of the course to their scientific project, and a short reference letter.

The organizing committee will also choose a limited number of PIs and industry attendees among the applications to attend this workshop, based on their CV, current knowledge, relevance of the course to their ongoing scientific projects.

Attendees of the 2023 edition of the AI4PD workshop will be given lower priority.

For the selection process, all applications need to provide:

  • CV
  • A Letter of Motivation explaining why they are interested in this practical course
  • A 350-word abstract with their current and future research focus

A short letter of reference from their PI (students and postdocs), direct supervisor or manager (industry attendees). For PIs, this letter should be replaced by a statement about the ongoing projects that will directly benefit from the attendance to this practical course.

Registration information

  • The CV must be short (2 pages max) and include information about current Institution and Research, Education, Publications, Oral Presentations in Conferences, Panel Presentations in conferences, and Honors and Awards.
  • The Letter of Motivation must comprise no more than 500 word and indicate your research interests and how they align with the talks and tutorials of the AI4PD workshop. The Letter of Motivation must also state that the participant will remain in Puerto Varas for the whole duration of the workshop and attend all sessions.
  • A Letter of Support of their PI (students and postdocs), Direct Supervisor or Manager (industry attendees), explicitly stating if the applicant participated in the AI4PD workshop from 2023, how their travel to Puerto Varas will be sponsored (e.g., grant funding, university funds, etc) or if they will require an EMBO travel award for attending the course, and how their participation in this workshop on AI for protein design will impact their current and future research. For PIs aiming to attend this course, this Letter of Support must be replaced by a statement about the ongoing projects that will directly benefit from the attendance to this practical course.

Attendees of the 2023 edition of the AI4PD workshop will be given lower priority.
