About the Practical Course

This EMBO Practical Course will cover the use of small angle scattering (SAS) of both neutrons and X-rays for the determination of the structures of biological macromolecules. Particular attention will be paid to sample preparation and the analysis and interpretation of SAS data in a biological context. The aim of this course is to enable the participants to maximise the information gained from the SAS technique in their future experiments.

Small angle scattering is a powerful technique for determining the structures of biological molecules in solution. Not only can small angle scattering provide precise information concerning the size, molecular weight, volume and shape of single molecules but it can also provide detailed information from large, multi-component macromolecular complexes. For these purposes the scattering properties of neutrons are particularly well suited. Through the use of specific isotope labeling techniques and solvent contrast variation it is possible to determine the structural organisation of specific components within a large macromolecular assembly.

Taking advantage of the location of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) on the same scientific campus in Grenoble, this EMBO course will focus on the complimentary use of X-ray and neutron small angle scattering for the determination of the structures of biological macromolecules. Through the use of lectures, tutorials and practicals it is intended to teach scientists new to the technique how to optimize their experiments to gain the maximum amount of information from these techniques. In particular the EMBO course will focus on:

  • Small angle X-ray and neutron scattering theory
  • Sample requirements for a successful small angle scattering experiment
  • Data analysis, model building and interpretation
  • Isotope labelling strategies for small angle neutron scattering

Analysing small angle scattering in conjunction with data obtained from complementary techniques (NMR, SEC-MALLS)

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Payment

A payment link will be sent to all successful participants by June 7th 2024 by email.

Cancellation Policy

Selected participants should inform the organizers per email by July 7th 2024, prior to payment of the registration fees, if they cannot participate, so that participants on the waiting list can be informed.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected on the basis of their CVs, publication lists, the quality of their scientific projects and the intended use and/or interest of small angle X-ray (SAXS) and neutron (SANS) scattering.

Applicants should therefore submit a short CV, a publication list, a description of the scientific project and the intended use of SAXS/SANS in that project, merged into a single PDF document.

Poster specifications

Poster format should be A0.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are availablefor scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

About the Area

Sustainability at the meeting

The EMBO Courses & Workshops Programme assesses meetings based on the proposal and implementation of sustainability measures. Meetings can earn points across a range of measures, with each measure assigned a point value from one to five. These points classify the meeting into one of three sustainability levels, reflecting the organizers' commitment to enhancing the sustainability of their event. More information on the EMBO Courses & Workshops Sustainability Badge can be found here: https://www.embo.org/conferences-training/sustainable-conferencing/
