About the Workshop

The biogenesis and maintenance of cells and organelles requires sophisticated biological machineries to target proteins to, and translocate proteins across, their corresponding membranes. Research to date has provided remarkable insights into the molecular mechanisms of an impressive variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic protein transport machineries. However, key questions regarding the molecular structures, regulation, and dynamics of these protein transport systems remain unsolved. Our meeting will focus on the latest advances and challenges in our understanding of protein transport, and will place emphasis on cutting edge approaches and techniques. This meeting will provide a platform for both early-career and established researchers to enjoy excellent talks, contribute to vivid discussions, and enjoy superb networking opportunities.

Amongst others, the following topics will be discussed:

• Unusual or non-conventional protein translocation

• Protein targeting and translocation in mitochondria

• Protein targeting and translocation in peroxisomes

• Protein targeting and translocation in the ER

• Protein targeting and translocation in bacteria

• Protein targeting and translocation in chloroplasts

• Structural aspects of protein translocation systems

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

If the number of applications exceeds the site capacity, participants will be selected on the basis of the submitted abstracts. The following criteria will be applied:

1. Relevance of the research to the workshop remit (i.e., protein targeting and translocation);

2. Career stage, with priority given to early-career group leaders, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced graduate students;

3. Gender and geographical location, to achieve a diverse and representative distribution of participants;

4. Subject area, with priority given to participants who will cover topics that are not dealt with by the invited speakers;

5. Laboratory affiliation, to ensure a minimal number of representatives from the same research group.

All selected participants will be requested to present a poster. In addition, a number of abstracts will be selected for either short talk or flash talk presentations.

Abstract guidelines

The Abstract should contain the following information:

• Title (maximum 20 words)

• Authors and affiliations (the presenting author and the senior author/supervisor should both be clearly indicated)

• Main text (150-200 words)

Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Poster specifications

A0 portrait. Maximum width, 95 cm; maximum height, 150 cm.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are availablefor scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
