About the Workshop

The mitochondrial genome is essential for cellular energy transduction and cell viability. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is replicated autonomously, and transcription and translation of mtDNA-encoded proteins by dedicated machineries within mitochondria produce components of the oxidative phosphorylation system. The dysregulation of these systems causes a range of human pathologies and also contributes to complex diseases. Many aspects of these mechanisms remain poorly understood, although recent years have seen rapid and exciting developments in the field, including the successful directed engineering of mtDNA in vivo, determination of the structural basis of mitochondrial transcription and translation, and the discovery that dysregulated mtDNA maintenance contributes to cellular inflammation. In this workshop, we will explore the frontiers of our knowledge of this topic through the following main sessions: (i) the maintenance and engineering of mtDNA, (ii) mitochondrial RNA and transcription, (iii) mitochondrial translation, and (iv) mitochondrial gene expression in cellular homeostasis.

We intend this meeting to bring together research leaders in these fields together with up-and-coming early career researchers to share breakthroughs and to define future research directions and priorities in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be asked to submit an abstract describing the work that they intend to present at the meeting. In the case that the meeting is oversubscribed then a selection will be made based upon how well the applicant's work fits with the topic of the meeting, while ensuring that this selection does not affect the gender balance. We will ensure participation from scientists from a large geographical area and from a large range of different laboratories. When selecting abstracts for short talks, we will score abstracts according to their scientific interest to the meeting while giving preference to talks from junior scientists and early-stage PIs, again maintaining gender balance.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should ideally describe unpublished material and be limited to 350 words maximum, including references. Please indicate if you wish to present a short talk. The abstract should display all authors and their full affiliation, a title and a short text describing your research. Abstracts are uploaded using an online application system.

Poster specifications

Maximum size of a poster: height 115 cm, width 95 cm.
