Selected participants will be sent payment details by email.
There will be a waiting list of a few applicants and places will be awarded if the possibility arises.
We advise selected participants to book travel as soon as possible after receiving notification, and to have proper travel insurance in place. The organizers cannot reimburse travel expenses should a participant be unable to attend the course due to sudden events.
Selection criteria
Applications will be evaluated by the organizer and co-organizers. Applicants should be aware that in order to be considered for place on this course they have to complete the application page and submit (1) a motivation letter and (2) a CV that describes their research project and gives their motivation to attend the course. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
We will choose applicants who show strong interest in microscopy, who can argue the need for electron microscopy methods in their research, and who show potential to make an impact in their field using the skills obtained at the practical course.
Based on the documents submitted, we will assess the following:
- The candidate’s need for electron microscopy methods to succeed in her/his project
- The impact on a candidate’s future career by being trained in electron microscopy
Application guidelines
Applicants should submit a motivation letter no longer than two A4 pages and a CV (max two A4 pages). Selected candidates are expected to be involved in a high-quality research project, as a PhD student, postdoc, or researcher, with or without some prior experience in electron microscopy. They should provide a concise background of their project, which is expected to have a strong microscopy aspect. It is important that candidates describe a need for one or more electron microscopy methods in this project.
Presentations
On the first day, the participants will give concise 7 minute presentations of their projects, including the significance of planned EM experiments. No posters are required.
Travel grants and registration fee waivers
Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.
Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.
Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered
Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
Special travel grants and registration fee waivers
A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are availablefor scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.
A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.
Child care grants
EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
Sustainability
University of Oslo has committed to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 through research-based measures (Green Campus). We will contribute to this commitment by the following measures:
- Catering will include locally sourced ingredients and vegetarian days.
- In organising meals, we will avoid disposable packaging, plates, cups, and cutlery.
- Public transport will be used for travelling within Oslo and from/to airports.
- A digital course manual will be provided to the participants, no print-outs will be available. Stereology exercises will be performed using laptops instead of transparent plastic sheets used in the past.
- Plastic-free badges will be used.
- Participants will be asked to use lab consumables cautiously in order to minimise the waste.
