About the Practical Course

Practical Course illustration

Different targeted proteomics strategies have recently emerged in the field of proteomics that enable the detection and quantification of a predetermined subset of proteins with a high degree of sensitivity and reproducibility across many samples. This EMBO Practical Course aims to fill in the gap between theory and the actual implementation of the targeted proteomics workflow, so that by the end of the week the students have the necessary know-how to implement the targeted proteomics workflows in their own research laboratories. The course will offer a daily keynote talk by a high-profile speaker introducing the topic of the day with examples of his/her own research, followed by "Practical demonstrations" (20%), and "Practical work and exercises" (40%) that will cover the complete workflow for experimental design and data analysis of targeted proteomics assays (i.e. targeted method design, optimization of instrument settings, manual and automated quantitative analysis, and statistical analysis of the data). Moreover, these sessions will be followed by "Poster Sessions" (10%) and "Social Events" to introduce informal discussion tables to adapt the technology to each participant's particular interests.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Submission of an abstract is mandatory.
Please also upload a motivation letter via the registration system.

In case more than 25 applicants register for this course, the following criteria will be applied to select the course participants:

  • As each applicant will be requested to submit a short abstract summarizing their project and how targeted proteomics might be useful for their research in the future, the selection of participants will be based on their motivation and skills.
  • Each applicant will be expected to have a basic prior knowledge of MS-based proteomics.
  • Fair distribution of applicants from different countries and scientific institutes.
  • Fair gender distribution.
  • Fair background distribution: students, postdocs, senior scientists, and industry participants.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts (in English) must be submitted within the online application no later than the 2nd of June 2023. Submission of an abstract does not ensure acceptance of the course. Abstracts should include a title, authors, authors’ institution addresses, and body.

Bibliographic references should only be used if quoted in the abstract body. The body of the abstract should not exceed 500 words in English.

Without the submitted abstract, the application will not be considered for further selection process.

Poster specifications

The course includes several poster sessions in which participants will explain their research projects. Each participant will be provided with an A0 poster board to display the poster.

The poster board surface area is approx. 90 cm (about 2.95 ft) wide and 120 cm (about 3.94 ft) high. This is a portrait/vertical format. Materials should be printed on thin poster paper or cardboard, anything heavier will not stay in position. You will be provided with velcro tabs and pins to adhere your poster to the board. All participants need to present their poster.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Transport

By plane

Barcelona’s main airport is Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat
Girona Airport (90 km)
Reus Airport (105 km)

By train

The city's main station is estació de Sants. This station is serviced by numerous national and international trains, including high-speed trains.

Barcelona has other train stations:

  • Estació de França, near Parc de la Ciutadella.
  • Plaça de Catalunya, in the city centre.
  • Clot-Aragó, near Plaça de les Glòries.
  • Arc de Triomf, station has a connection with Barcelona Nord bus station.
  • Passeig de Gràcia, at the heart of the Modernista route.

Long-distance journeys are best booked in advance but for shorter journeys, including those in Barcelona on the local rodalies (Catalan) or cercanías (Spanish) services, you can buy a ticket before boarding the train.

Barcelona is also served by the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). Although they run short and medium-distance inter-city train services, these are integrated into the city's underground network, the Metro, which means you can use the T-10, a combined ticket for 10 journeys on city buses and the underground as well as the FGC trains.

By bus

The main bus station is Barcelona Nord, which is very near the center, by the Arc de Triomf, although most buses stop at Sants station. There are national and international services and usually, it is not necessary to book in advance. The bus station is linked to the city’s underground system. Look at the map with the different underground lines and bus routes on the TMB website.

Transport from the Airport El Prat

You can get to the city from the airport with the Aerobús with stops in Plaça d’Espanya, Urgell, Plaça de la Universitat and Plaça de Catalunya, or the underground line L9. The airport train station is located 200 meters outside the terminal T2 building and the train goes to the Barcelona Sants Estació.

There is also a standard bus and night bus. Click here for more information.
