About the Workshop

Cancer is a complex disease involving multiple molecular and cellular events. Significant progress was made in characterizing the genetics of cancer and cellular pathways that are critical for cancer initiation and progression. However, most studies focused on single genes or proteins thus highlighting the need to analyze cancers as integrated systems of gene/protein/metabolite networks and underlying regulatory mechanisms. This EMBO Workshop focuses on applying and integrating high-throughput “omics” technologies, single-cell approaches and computational methods to analyze cancer-related processes and responses to drug treatments. This EMBO Workshop has been held for the first time in Split in 2021 and has been a huge success. The focus of this new 2023 workshop will again be to gather world’s best scientists working in the field, bringing together young and experienced scientists applying genome-scale or quantitative biology approaches. As in 2021, a strong focus of our meeting will be promoting the next generation of researchers in the “systems biology of cancer” field. The program includes the following main subjects: application of omics technologies to cancer research, quantitative/single cell cancer biology, drug discovery and cancer therapeutics, and new methodological developments. A large fraction of the talks will be selected from abstracts and so that the meeting will facilitate interactions among all attendees.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

We have already selected speakers who have all confirmed their participation at our workshop if it gets funded by EMBO. These speakers were selected on the basis of their work at the leading edge of research relevant to the topic of our workshop, for their qualities as speakers, their ability to communicate with and energize junior investigators and, most importantly, to ensure gender balance. Gender balance and a balanced geographic distribution will be considered in selecting the participants, the speakers for the short talks and the recipients of the travel fellowships.

The scientific program includes a combination of new speakers and established scientists, to promote continuity and community building.

Fifteen slots have been reserved for short talks (15 minutes) for which the speakers will be chosen from submitted abstracts on the basis of scientific merit and relevance to the themes of the workshop. The organizers will ensure that the selected speakers include a balanced mix of students, postdocs, and early stage investigators.

All participants will be encouraged to submit abstracts on their current research. Those not selected for short talks will get a chance to showcase their work in the flash talk session and poster sessions.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts are now being accepted for lecture (invited speakers), short oral presentation (SOP) or poster presentation in each of the sessions.

You may upload pictures (monochromatic) if you like.

Poster specifications

Posters should not exceed the following dimensions: 90 cm x 110 cm (width x height).
