About the Workshop

Workshop illustration

Sumoylation is an essential post-translational modification that regulates thousands of target proteins in a dynamic manner. Small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMOs) can be attached to target proteins as one or more monomers or in the form of polymers.

The past decade has increased our understanding of the cellular and pathophysiological roles of SUMO modifications, extending its functions to the regulation of immunity, pluripotency, stress response and dynamics of molecular condensates. Such progress in understanding the roles and regulation of SUMOylation opens new avenues for the targeting of SUMO to treat disease. Indeed, recent discoveries have revealed great therapeutic potential of modulating SUMOylation, in particular in cancer. The relevance of SUMOylation expands to plant development and plant stress tolerance, highlighting its potential as a biotechnological target for improving crop yield.

The aim of this EMBO Workshop is to integrate perspectives on the function of SUMOylation from the fields of biochemistry, molecular cell biology, structural biology, genetics, plant science, pluripotency, immunity, oncology, neurodegeneration and drug discovery. We will stimulate exchanges between established and young scientists, as well as between basic scientists, clinicians and industry, to stimulate the growth of translational SUMOylation research to tackle challenges in health and agriculture.

This workshop is based upon work form COST Action ProteoCure, CA20113, supported by COST.

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

Cancellation policy:

All requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to EMBO_SUMO@lumc.nl prior to 20 July 2023. The registration fee will be refunded in full, less an administrative fee of 20% of the registration amount.

Cancellations received after 20 July 2023 or no-show will not be refunded at all.

Selection criteria

Participant selection will be guided by submitted abstracts, according to the expected scientific impact of the work on the conference and the field. It is, therefore, requested that all participants submit an abstract (at the time of registration, they should also specify whether they wish to present a poster or short talk).

For participants who do not plan to present their work, a CV (for principal investigators) or motivation letter (for students/post-docs) is requested. The CV/motivation letter has to be sent to EMBO_SUMO@lumc.nl prior 1 June 2023.

In addition, a proper balance of participants from different countries, genders, and career stages will be sought.

Otherwise, selection will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The organizing committee will send a notification of your acceptance to the conference and/or selection for oral presentations within 2-3 weeks after the abstract submission deadline. This e-mail will also include payment details.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts MUST:

  • be submitted in English
  • include the title, authors list and affiliations
  • be submitted with the agreement of all listed authors
  • character limit: up to 250 words (maximum 2200 characters including spaces)

Poster specifications

Poster size: height 110 cm, width 80 cm.

Any other registration information

For participants who do not plan to present their work, a CV (for principal investigators) or motivation letter (for students/post-docs) is requested. The CV/motivation letter has to be sent to EMBO_SUMO@lumc.nl prior to 1 June 2023.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are availablefor scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant.
