About the Practical Course
Modification of proteins is a crucial mechanism in cellular regulation. In addition, PTMs of a given protein can affect other PTMs, leading to distinct functions of the protein, a phenomenon termed PTM cross-talking. Linking PTM dynamics and cell biology is an expanding area and one fraught with technical difficulties. In collaboration with EMBO we are looking forward to hosting yet another practical course in Odense, Denmark. Attending this course will provide you with hands-on experience within the field of protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) and you will obtain a new and solid network of scientists having interests similar to yours.
This EMBO practical course aims to provide a theoretical and practical overview of state-of-the-art techniques for the characterization of various PTMs, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, cysteine PTMs and glycosylation, and their cross-talking in controlling dynamic cellular mechanisms. The laboratory part will focus on a case study of EGF stimulated SILAC labeled HeLa cells. You will be introduced to enrichment, identification and quantitation of the PTM peptides and to mass spectrometry analysis as well as data interpretation and bioinformatics. This will provide you with knowledge needed to perform quantitative large-scale PTMomics from small amounts of sample material yourself. You will be taught in methods developed in the laboratories of the speakers and they will provide you with their own tips and tricks.
In addition to lectures and laboratory work the program contains poster sessions, group discussions, learning activities, and social events. Our bright new laboratory and large mass spectrometry instrument park will provide the physical framework for the 8-day course. All students will be accommodated together in a central hotel in H.C. Andersen's city of birth.
Some comments from participants from the previous years:
"I would like to highlight the speaker’s expertise and willingness to share knowledge with everyone."
"I was feeling very well all the time, which surely contributed to my steep learning curve."
“It was great to discuss the ideas of my study through the poster session with the scientists and participants from different research backgrounds. I got some important suggestions which I could implement in my study.”
“Great speakers and everyone were so welcoming, helpful and spent time answering all our questions. I really felt like I learnt a lot about the different methodology.”
"There were also 10 minutes oral presentations of each participant, which was a great opportunity to exchange ideas."
“The organization was excellent and the venue was of the highest standards. “
“I think the meeting was just excellent! I got the best from it and I will honestly recommend it to my colleagues. We learned a lot, we had excellent speakers and I met great people with whom hopefully I am planning meetings in future!”
About EMBO Courses and Workshops
EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).
Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.
