About the Workshop

Developmental neuronal remodelling is essential for establishing functional nervous systems across species. Remodelling involves specific elimination of existing connections, typically followed by strengthening of surviving synapses or even axon regrowth to develop new, adult-specific connections. While altered remodeling has long been suspected of contributing to neuropsychiatric conditions, such as autism, schizophrenia, and ADHD, studies only recently established firm molecular similarities between such disorders and developmental remodeling. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in developmental remodelling appear to be reiterated in neurodegeneration and during regeneration. Despite these significant advances in the field, many important questions remain open and will be discussed at this meeting.

Specific topics that will be covered in this workshop include:

  • Cell biological mechanisms and signaling pathways that control remodelling.
  • Pathways activated in different paradigms and across species.
  • Types of remodelling in circuit formation and its impact on learning and memory.
  • Contributions of non-neuronal cells during remodelling.
  • Neuron-neuron and tissue-neuron interactions during remodelling.
  • Mechanisms of regrowth during developmental remodelling and post-traumatic regeneration?

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on availability, with priority given to participants submitting a relevant abstract. Around 12 short talks will be selected from abstracts based on quality, novelty, and the inclusion of unpublished data.

Abstract guidelines

The purpose of this intimate workshop is to foster discussion on open questions in neuronal remodelling. Thus, abstracts should ideally describe unpublished material.

Abstracts should be limited to 300 words.

Poster specifications

Your poster should be printed in a portrait layout.

Dimensions: 1.20 * 0.90 m.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Applicants should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered and please send an email to neuronal.remodelling@gmail.com with the following documentation:

  • A short letter of intent stating why you wish to participate in this workshop (1 page max)
  • A statement in the cover application email that the applicant agrees to present a poster at the meeting
  • A short letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor/mentor/department head
  • A brief (one page) curriculum vitae
  • An abstract should be submitted through the on-line submission system
  • All applications and supporting documents should be submitted in English by 1 November

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

About the Area

Nahsholim Seaside Resort is a beautiful, secluded venue located in the center of Israel, In the beautiful Kibbutz Nahsholim. The hotel units are extremely close to the main conference room, and these are all located along the mediterranean sea on one of Israel's most beautiful stretches of beach at the foot of Mt. Carmel, adjacent to clear blue lagoons, a natural bay, fish, birds, and sunsets. Lush lawn areas surround the houses in all directions, and winding paths join all the units that the registrants will occupy. The serenity and tranquility of the area provide an ideal setting to facilitate informal discussions and networking. The weather in Nahsholim in March is very pleasant, the average temperature is 20 Celsius degrees, mostly sunny.
