About the Workshop

Lipid droplets (LDs) are major hubs in cellular and organismal metabolism that are highly conserved across species. Numerous cell biological and metabolic pathways converge at LDs to maintain energy and nutrient homeostasis. Their role in metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver and cardiovascular disease is undisputed. LDs are also important for host pathogen interaction, by supporting proliferation of infectious agents like viruses or bacteria, and are part of the innate immune system. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the roles of LDs in health and disease are only beginning to emerge. A better understanding of key questions regarding the formation and consumption of LDs, as well as their functional and dynamic integration into cellular metabolism hold great promise to make inroads into the fascinating molecular world of the pathophysiology surrounding LDs.

This EMBO Workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary and diverse group of scientists discussing recent developments and cutting-edge advances in LD research. The meeting is going to provide a unique platform for exchange between basic and clinical researchers across all career levels with ample opportunity for networking and career development.

The highly diverse and multidisciplinary workshop is composed of 8 sessions encompassing topics from molecular LD cell biology, biophysics, computational modeling and state of the art methodology in lipid analytics and diagnostics.

The session themes bridge topics from physiology to pathology including:

- Mechanisms of LD biogenesis and turnover

- Role of LD communication at organelle contact sites

- Computational modeling and biophysical properties of LDs

- Physiological functions of LDs in health and disease states & New functions of LDs as well as the emerging field of LD diversity.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

If the number of applications exceeds the capacity of the venue, participants will be selected from submitted abstracts based on:

i) Scientific excellence and content of the abstract representing the full scope of the workshop

ii) Minimal number of participants from the same lab

iii) Priority to participants who complement topics that are not covered by invited speakers

The organizers will ensure a balanced participation of senior PIs and early career scientists, especially graduate students and postdocs. Likewise, they will aim for a diverse group of scientists regarding gender and geographical location.

Each selected participant will be requested to present a poster. Outstanding abstracts will be selected for short oral presentations or poster flash talks.

Abstract guidelines

Your abstract should contain the following information:

  • Title
  • Authors and affiliations (the presenting author should be underlined)
  • Maximum abstract length is 250 words.

Please indicate whether you would like your abstract to be considered for an oral presentation.

Poster specifications

Maximum poster size is A0 portrait (84,1 cm x 118,9 cm / 33.1 x 46.8 inches)

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
