About the Workshop

The Hedgehog morphogen pathway is a key signalling pathway in development and stem cell regulation. Hedgehog deregulation leads to developmental and neurological diseases and is a crucial driver of several cancers. The goal of this conference is to bring together experts working on the mechanism of action of Hedgehog signalling in Developmental Biology, Disease, and Signal Transduction. The meeting will focus on the recent structural, biochemical, and cell-biological studies that shed new light on the mechanisms by which the Hedgehog signal is received on target cells and the unexpected role of cholesterol as a second messenger. Moreover, the recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the Hedgehog morphogen biosynthesis, its release from cells into extracellular space, and the mechanisms involved in ligand reception will be discussed. We will also cover the most recent insights into Hedgehog-dependent control of cell proliferation and differentiation in processes that range from insect morphogenesis to vertebrate limb formation, neural tube development, and bone differentiation.

Topics:

  • Structural Studies on Hedgehog signalling
  • Hedgehog signalling in Disease
  • Mechanisms of Hedgehog signalling
  • Hedgehog signalling in Development

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timeliness, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be female).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected from applicants on the basis of their scientific excellence, with strong support for students and early-stage scientists. We are also particularly keen to have a good mix of basic and translational researchers. A total of 14 applicants will be selected to present their work as a short oral presentation, the rest of the selected applicants should present their work at the poster sessions.

Abstract guidelines

The main text of the abstract should not exceed 200 words and should include background, experimental approach, key findings, and significance to the field.

Poster specifications

Poster can be prepared in free design and fonts.

Follow the sizes below:
Width: 90 cm
Height: 120 cm

This corresponds to an A0 vertical format.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. More information is available on the EMBO Travel Grants' page.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Travel by car

120 km from Barcelona, via the AP-7 and the C-35 / 135 km from Perpignan, via the AP-7 /700 km from Madrid.

Travel by plane

Distance to airports: 30km from the International Airport Girona-Costa Brava, and 120 km from El Prat (Barcelona). Public transport is available from both airports. From El Prat there is a regular shuttle bus driving towards the city centre. Approx. each hour a bus (Sarfa) will leave from the North Station to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, which is about 2 hours away.

Travel by train

The nearest train station is in Girona (at 30 Km).

Organised transportation for participants

As many participants will likely arrive at Barcelona airport, we will arrange shuttle buses on the day of arrival and the departure day (at specified times according to most arrivals). Girona transfer will only be available if a sufficient number of participants travel that way.
