About the Workshop

Elucidating signal transduction processes in biology is fundamental, if we want to understand the mechanisms of life and engineer novel photoreceptors with custom-tailored light-regulated function. However, the study of protein dynamics-watching proteins work in various time scales (from the femtosecond to the steady state) - is very challenging.

In the past decades, time-resolved spectroscopy has revolutionized the understanding of protein function by probing excited states and revealing the kinetic profile of light-triggered intermediates. On the other hand, time-resolved X-ray techniques have generated atomic resolution models of structural intermediates and revealed conformational dynamics by providing snapshots of the dynamic processes in light-sensitive biomolecules. None of these experimental techniques is able to unravel dynamic processes in biomolecules by itself, whereas quantum mechanical and classical dynamics numerical calculations are needed to complement the experimental results.

This EMBO Workshop aims to bring together workers from the fields of time-resolved spectroscopy and time-resolved X-ray techniques as well as theoreticians in order to present their recent works and discuss the synergy of the experimental techniques to advance our understanding of light-induced biological dynamics processes and foster new collaborations between the different fields. To this goal, this EMBO Workshop will also highlight the cutting-edge instrumentation that facilitates game-changing advances in biological dynamical processes.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Payment

Selected participants will be asked to pay by bank transfer or by credit card.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected based on the following criteria:

1. their work covers at least one of the two disciplines (time-resolved spectroscopy and/or time-resolved X-ray techniques applied to study dynamic processes)

2. excellence of the scientific work

3. early-stage researchers (post-docs and PhD students) will be given priority

4. female researchers will be given priority to oral presentations as well as poster presentations in order to have equal contribution from both male and female researchers (50:50 or at least 60:40).

5. broad geographical representation

6. participants must confirm their registration by paying their registration fee

Abstract guidelines

250 words maximum (title, authors and affiliations are not included). Graphs and Tables can be included but the overall content should not exceed one A4-page.

Poster specifications

The poster should be one page/slide only and submitted as a JPEG format.

Additional requiremements

PhD and post-docs will be asked to provide a very short motivation letter stating their research interests and why they wish to participate at the workshop.

Registration fee waivers

Registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.
Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special registration fee waivers

A limited number of registration fee waivers are available for scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
