Single-cell and spatial omics have increased the data granularity available for understanding biological mechanisms as well as exponentially increasing the amount of biomedical data available. Modelling has helped biomedical projects by uncovering mechanisms behind drug synergies and personalizing drug treatments while allowing for the study of all scales, from molecules to cells to tissues to organs and even to whole bodies. High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments have enabled the scaling up of scientific computing allowing it to reach an unprecedented scope. HPC has become an essential tool in many fields due to its ability to power up data analysis, storage and large-scale processing.

This in-person 5-day EMBO Workshop will gather early-career researchers and field leaders at the crossroads of single-cell omics, modelling and HPC to pave the way for realistic, scalable human digital twins of cells, tissues and organs. Presentations and discussions around these rapidly-evolving topics will push the field forward by training researchers with techniques from neighbouring fields and allowing them to tackle problems using combined approaches.

Additionally, we will hold training courses and mentoring sessions to prepare a new generation of early-career researchers to address the fundamental problems of having realistic, scalable human digital twins.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants are required to provide a motivation letter and a one-page CV.

We aim to have early-career researchers from all continents. We will focus on PhD students and recently graduated postdocs from Biology, Mathematics, and Computer Science fields. We are aware that most students might come with a computational biology background, but we will look for students from these areas as their contribution is paramount to this community.

Gender balance is a goal that has our utmost attention. We have a balanced organizing committee and presenters' list, and we aim to have a balanced students' list.

Participants will be reviewed on correctness, originality, and technical strength of their abstract and the alignment to the workshop topics with their career and interests stated in their CV and motivation letter.

Abstract guidelines

The abstract should be 350 words maximum and should cover what are you working on and what techniques you are using to answer your scientific question that is relevant for this workshop. You will also be asked about which session you consider closer to your work.

Poster specifications

The proposed poster size is A0 format (portrait). The size of the poster stand is 196 cm high x 96 cm wide.

Travel grants and registration fee waivers

Travel grants and registration fee waivers are available for participants.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizers. EMBO travel grants and registration fee waivers are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

Applicants do not need to apply separately for these but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered.

Additional travel grants are available for EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

Special travel grants and registration fee waivers

A limited number of travel grants and registration fee waivers are availablefor scientists working in Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Grants are allocated on the basis of the quality of the submitted abstract.

A maximum of 700 Euros per participant are available to cover registration fees, travel, and accommodation (no additional subsistence costs can be covered). To apply, please indicate the itemized amount requested in the travel grants section of the registration form.

Child care grants

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional childcare costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the childcare grant and specify the sum that you will need.
